The helpful folks at LOWES said that I can use 12ga. romex wire for my in wall speaker connection. Does it matter that it is solid copper instead of stranded, can you get just as good audio transfer? Or are they get-er-done rednecks?

some people actually prefer solid core wire...I seem to remember many years ago that the Brits thought this was the way to go.
I would take a different approach for a long in wall run because I think it is possible that the Romex could pick up some hum and noise.
You could use 18 gauge solid core hookup wire and use a double run of twisted pairs.
This stuff is available anywhere...4 bucks for 60 feet at Radio Shack.
Or just use your standard Monster clone 12 AWG braided.
Romex could be mistaken at some time for AC mains by a future tenant so I think it is best not to use it if for that reason only.

Here's a 100 foot length of 12ga in-wall speaker wire, UL listed, CMR or CL3R rated, for $19.30 (less for orders of 3 or more). BTW, that's less even than their 14ga in-wall at $22.50/100 feet.

Go to http://www.partsexpress.com and search for part #100-740.

Local codes do vary but I think most do specify that in-wall wiring (including speaker wire in the wall) must be UL approved. The wire EYE has posted meets the requirments and seems to be a decent deal for the money. Estan brought up a good point about using romex and future owners of the house.

have fun!

Just get a box of NM (Romex) and wire the dopey wall..you ain't gonna hear any thing between something called speaker wire and Romex..the elecrons don't know or care. And you are certainly not gonna hear if it's stranded or solid...what a bunch of non issues. just get some boxes, terminate the wire in the box, use some speaker connectors at the wall boxes also availabe from Parts Express...anything more is a tottal waste of money and time.

aren't you the guy with the 8 mbs cable modem?
Let me ask you again what you are paying for this bandwidth and from whom and where?

The "future owner" idea is something to consider and a good suggestion but, anyone doing elecrical wiring isn't going to go and just start twisting wires together without testing and checking them first! If your concerned, terminated them with speaker connections at both ends.

Proflex manufactures great speaker cable at a very reasonable price. I paid .30/ft for double and .60/ft for quad. It is UL approved and CL3 rated. It flexibility makes it superior to romex.

Belden...on choosing a speaker cable...
"There are two decisions to make on selecting a speaker cable. The first is conductor gauge size which is determined by how much power and performance loss you are willing to accept due to the cables presence. The second is what cable design or construction best fits the installation enviroment."
