I bought a cheap $6.99 Phillips magnavox optical cable from wal-mart and took it home and compared it to my $50.00 monster optical cable,i used my DVD player for the test and im here to tell ya that i could hear no difference what-so-ever!What gives?Seems like the more expensive cable was just a waste of money.

With optical cable, there should be no difference unless you go to extreme lengths, and even then the difference should be minimal. The whole idea behind using optical cable is that it is relatively immune to outside interference such as EMI and RFI, since it is light, rather than electrical current, passing through the cable. The only reason some may cost more than others is that they are made of glass. That's it. Sorry you spent so much.

Sorry, that is not a prerequisite. Monster is not glass but they are greedy, have lots of salesmen to reward and pay for marketing.

"What gives?"

Nothing, that is the way it is.

"Seems like the more expensive cable was just a waste of money."

Yes, it was/is.

Chances are, in this case, for this length cable, they are probably the same, other than price.

This should help explain some things:
