| Does anyone ever listen to music here? | AllanH Nov 27, 2001 1:53 AM | | I've followed with interest and ( sometimes ) amusement the various posts here. Even contributed the odd bit. Most of it is surely merely chasing one's own tail....
Didn't we all grow up hearing music on awful kit ? - in my case AM radio and 78 records . And did the music hit? - it certainly did me.
You could play back a great recording on almost any gear and would still be great. And a naff piece would still be naff on the fanciest hifi in the world.
May I suugest we have a sense of proportion - no matter what we pay for reproducing equipment, it is merely that. The important people are the musicians and recording engineers who made it happen.

| Music??? | DMK Nov 27, 2001 5:15 AM | | Oh, you mean the stuff that we have ta put on our systems to see if our gear sounds good - that stuff! :)
Your comments are well taken. No matter what I have as my main system, I can still listen on a clock radio, a 78 rpm record player, a cheesy mini-system or a computers built in CD player. I'm sure most of us here built our systems after spending years with a very deep commitment to the music. And you're right - the best CD's I own sound great in my standard General Motors car system and even if they didn't, they would - if you get my meaning.
Thanks for the post! |
| This is about music?..... | FLZapped Nov 27, 2001 5:33 AM | | Just kidding of course. Yes, I listen to lots of music. Have my PC speakers playing a local station now here at work.
I also listen in my vehicle.
I agree with you.

| re: Yes as often as I can everyday. | Robert Hamel Nov 27, 2001 7:30 AM | | Yes all the time at work and at home and in the car. I have some kind of music going in the backround. You raise a very good point. My first stereo was an old Sony real to real with speakers on the sides. I didn't matter then and it doesn't now. If I like it I can enjoy it on any system clock radio and up. I prefer listening on better gear but I don't let that get in the way of enjoying the music. Yes thanks to the musicians as they improve the quality of our lives. |

Yep...I did before I arrived at this particular forum, got sidetracked for a day or so trying to figure out why certain people seemingly have a desperate need to be right about things, and woke up with my senses intact.
Back to the music... |
| Nah, AM talk radio is all I listen to. | Markw* Nov 27, 2001 11:30 AM | | Yes, both my wife and myself listen to a lot of music, preferably live, but when that's not possible, on our home stereo.
That stereo is on more than the TV set. |
| Slight Twist | Mwalsdor@cscc.edu Nov 27, 2001 1:31 PM | | Good question. I started a post on another relatively new forum. I asked if they could relate/disclose their "Audioselves" so we could better comprehend our exchanges, choice of equipment/music and POV. The feedback I received was not so much their philosophy in Audioreplay but more a history of their partisipation in replay AND MUSIC. In reading those replies one got a good picture of the importance of music in their lives and how it may relate to their fascination with replay technologies. It was also pretty obvious, where their passion was, and what germinated that passion. I understand your query on this forum because of the lack of "musical" discussion on many of the boards, and much of the amusement you mentioned is reconized.
Regarding your priorities or "sense of proportion" in playback, where does the listener fit in? Certainly not at the top of the chain, but not exactly "out of the loop" either. I'm of the opinion that as long as the state of playback affects (colors) our source material we are involved. Involved in the DEGREE of the effect. Not in an absolute way but still the components we choose and how we group them affect the result. I've accepted this limitation, but also found it to be a source of much pleasure because of the direct cause and effect one wields.

| re: Does anyone ever listen to music here? | Warren Warren Nov 27, 2001 2:43 PM | | I'm listening right now. And, I too will listen on anything. I have a discman, boombox, clock radio, radio in the kitchen, speakers on all 4 of my PC's, including my one at work, and of course my main system. I always enjoy listening to music, but to REALLY get into it, I kick off my shoes, lean back, turn off the lights, and crank up my system. When there are no distractions, no outside noises, and no worries, that is my Nirvana (the state of mind, not the group). |

Couldn't have said it better.
Yes, I certainly listen to a great deal of music, mostly various types of classical music.
Some of us do frequent Rave Recordings. I learn some things about popular music and jazz. There are not many questions concerning classical music, but I contribute when I can. |
