| Bare Wire or Bananas? | Peter Lee Nov 20, 2001 9:15 PM | | I recently bought a set of B&W DM303 speakers. Is there a difference between using bare wire connection and banana connection? I was informed by the dealer that bare connection was the best way to go. Also, could someone recommend me where to buy decent speaker wires? Thanks.

bare wire is certainly a good connection but not always convenient. locking bananas would be preferable to reg nanas. spade lugs are also good.
speaker wire----audioquest type 4 are great sounding wires but i think they need terminating with spades or nanas.
you will be inundated with suggestions/demands that you use home depot/ratshack cheeeeepstuff, and while thats servicable, a little better sound can be gotten with hte aq wire. its not expensive and a good dealer will let you borrow the stuff.

Only demand is to justify your testable claims, lofi. |

| If I bare my wires, will I go bananas? | itellitlikeitis Nov 21, 2001 3:33 AM | | Bare wires, bananas, bare wires, bananas, bare wires, bananas, bare wires, bananas, she loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not. Oh oh what shall I do???????????????????????
Sound wise it doesn't make a hill of beans difference. Convenience wise, bananas are easy to work with but since you'll probably make this connection once..... If you do go bananas, cheap ones are perfectly good. The electrical resistance of any of these is nil expecially compared to the impedence of the speaker. If you are worried about oxidation over the long term, solder to a spade lug. Otherwise, just cut the ends off every few years and remake the connection. |

As for wire. You're local Home Depot(or other hardware/electrical supply store) sells 12 AWG wire for under $0.50/foot.

So choose whichever is convenient for you.
But a bare connection with large contact area is the best of all. |
