The player and receiver have connections for optical, s-video, rca jacks, and component. Which is the best way to go?
thanks

If possible connect the DVD player direct to the TV. usually results in the best possible picture. If you need the conveniance of AVR switching then use component cables or good S-video connections between DVD and RCVR then the same to the TV. As you can probably guess its cheaper to go direct from the DVD to the TV as you save on one cable set. You will get a much better image with s-video over composite. A smaller improvement with component video over s-video.
The choice of optical or RCA for audio will depend on which component has the better DAC. If you use the optical out on the DVD player then you will be using the avr's DAC. if you use analog audio ( RCA) out then you will be using the DVD players built in DAC ( digital analog convertor)try both methods and see which results in better sound.

Magster has a good input. I'd recommend the digital audio to the receiver to keep the signal digital as long as possible. An analog input to the receiver may be converted back to digital again and back to analog.
