I recently bought a sub which has a Controller Box for adjustment(NHT Subonei).I had my Pre-Amp running through it and noticed that my High Freq. were becoming recessed.Cymbals were the first thing I had noticed.

I decided to buy a set of Monster "Y" Connects in order to have the Pre-Amp seperated from running through the Controller.Upon introducing the Y in I noticed that now the Imageing has been affected, the voice info is alittle veiled compared to before, but some of the former things that were happening with the sub have dissapeared.Like Huffing on a few tracks I use to test bass response(better intergation).

I hope that this clears up once the Monster is broken in alittle while.

My system consist of the following :
Speaker's
Magnapan 1.4's
Psb 40 MK.II's
NEAR M15's
Near M50's

Amp
B&K ST-202 (Modified)
Pre-Amp
Rotel RC-950

Interconnects
AQ-Ruby(AMP to Pre-Amp)
Monster (Cd to Pre-Amp)Phillips CD-60

Speaker Cable
Blue Indingo

The speaker's I switch out frequently ,but I have the Maggies in at the moment for testing!

If there are people who feel that Interconnects and Speaker Cable do not change sounds I suggest they get Maggies and tell me then it does not Effect playback!

Just food for thought!

...Lessee, you added a sub and the highs "...recessed..."? Sounds like the overall FR was altered to me...or maybe worse...

Then added "Y" connectors...I think even the most vocal proponents of non-generic wiring would strongly advise against their use, as they can cause problems with some circuits. Once "Y" connected, some sonic characteristics may be affected due to impedance mismatches and the like.

"...If there are people who feel that Interconnects and Speaker Cable do not change sounds I suggest they get Maggies and tell me then it does not Effect playback!..."

Kindly give an example to support your quote...I can't recall ANYONE saying there could not be a "change" in sound quality, the question is, "Is it an actual improvement or merely change?"

Kindly remember, anything that causes the original to be changed in any significant way(even though it may be pleasing to YOU)is a distortion of the original and hardly hi-fi, IMO. Additionally, what may seem to be working now, may become abysmal the next time you "switch out" your loudspeakers and should that occur, isn't that an indication of how non-neutral(and consequently non-hi-fi)your wiring actually is?

Well Res Loser,I did not have recessed High's before I put in the Y connect, but I did after! It might be that the Y needs to have the old electrons running through it before it goes away!

As far as the Maggies sensitivity to changes,I can only give you what I know from my experiences with them and that is that any changes done to the chain (Interconnects,Speaker Cables)will certainly effect the playback sound in my system which are noticable. In my travels through audio I have found that some equiptment is more sensitive than other's and further more some differences are not as apparent as others. Some do not show up as readily as other's,but they do show up!

I believe that Cables can induce changes neither being negative or positive ,but rather used as tweeking aids for sound customizers.

Have had a long day and that is all I can say about it at the moment!

Too bad ones hearing is not as sensitive but ones imaginations are unlimited.

neither running your preamp outs through the subs low-pass filters or putting a Y-connector on the preamp outs is a good idea. The filters in subs are notoriously bad, even the ones in Velodynes, besides the long IC's that result usually have way too much capacitance. I have tested several of these filters myself. The only decent filter I have experienced was one from Snell, which was low-noise and well designed (Linkwitz-Riley, low phase-shift). As for the Y-connector, this will add significant capacitance to the preamp outputs. Break-in of the Monster IC's will not fix your problem.

The best solution is a preamp with dual outputs. Sometimes these come as Single-Ended and Balanced. Use both of these, one to the power amp and one to the sub.

If your preamp has only one set of outputs, an alternative is a good separate filter, such as the Snell, which you can locate between the preamp and amp with very short cables between. Then the output to the sub is buffered. You still have a filter between the preamp and power amp, but it is a good-quality one and the IC's can be kept short for the front channels. If you want more info on the Snell (I have one), Email me at: nugent@agora.rdrop.com

I have 2 Pre-Amp Outs!I did not stop to think that I could just as well run it out of that.

I will try that ,but In my listening I noticed changes going on.Do not know why on certain Tracks I like I was getting a Boom effect which now has subsided. Not huffing or whatever it was doing after I inserted the "Y"s.

Thanx
