| Dr. Floyd Toole (cont'd.) | John McHugh Jun 13, 2002 2:41 PM | | I saw the thread below on Dr. Floyd Toole and wanted to offer some opinion. I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive me if this any of my points have already been made by others.
First of all, I don't think Dr. Toole has been all that public on the cable debate, although a few years back Mtry was kind enough to forward me some personal comments from him which included a four-word synopsis of audio cable science. Because this is hearsay of the nth degree, I won't quote him. He is certainly not alone in his belief that cables are much ado about nothing. A valid question is whether somebody in his position would choose to be active in preventing other groups under the HK umbrella from marketing products that he, in all likelihood, doesn't think the consumer needs, at least as a substitute for what they already have.
I would like to think that I, in such a position, would be more outspoken on topics that I feel damage the credibility of hi-end audio, but really, who's to say what issues he or anybody else is faced with every day, such that he would have the time, energy, or inclination to protect audiophiles from their own ABE's? I would be surprised to learn that Dr. Toole even reads the cable subsidiary's quarterly technology reports, assuming that they put out such a thing.
Ditto for John Dunlavy, but his position is a little more difficult for me to rationalize (his name is on the products and he has been public on challenging the nonsense).

I do know what Dr. Toole does believe in: DBTs. His work in loudspeaker design right here in my hometown always included DBTs.
As a matter of fact, his methodology has been adopted by the Communications Research Centre of Canada. They are doing some interesting work in audio and acoustics. See: http://www.crc.ca/en/html/crc/research/broadcast/advanced_audio/advanced_audio
I believe Dr. Toole position would be similar to my own but he probably doesn't have either the time nor the inclination to get into.
I'm reaching that point now. |

With respect to his accessible work, the experimental set-up that allows him to DBT speakers is fascinating. I wish I had a room like that.
