Glass is used as the backbone for continent wide networks. As a matter of fact, what I type and send right here is going over glass fibre optics at some point.
However, since the digital audio signal in home audio systems has only a 3 mHz bandwidth, and usually only needs to go a few feet, plastic is sufficient.
If you could tell the sound difference between glass and plastic fibre optics in a home audio system, you would probably be the first person in the world to do so. |
