Component vid problemMasked_Wolf

Hi all,

I just tried to hook up a Yamaha DVD player to a Toshiba rear-projection using the component video outputs and inputs. I just used normal composite rca cables as thought this was all you needed to get it to work. I used the very thin yellow, red and white cables from a Sony DVD player. However when I switch to DVD input on the TV the picture is very snow stormy with only a miniscule amount of actual picturing showing amidst the storm. Any ideas on what is wrong? I double checked that each plug wen't to the correct output.

You do need better cables. All 3 lines should be 75 ohm coaxial cables. The red/white/yellow do not meet this requirement. Although I don't know if the picture would be that bad just from poorly matched cables, sounds like something else may be the issue. The yellow wire may be 75 ohm if it is larger than the red and white wires. Use this one on the green connection, see if it improves.

Does your DVDp need the component output turned on in a menu? Also, make sure the output and input match as to interlaced or progressive signal. If both your machines are capable of progressive, there may be a switch of some sort on the DVDp, and the TV may allow progressive input only on certain inputs.

The red and white wire is audio cables, not video ones. Gross mismatch of impedance can be a problem.

I agree with Spiky, why you can use Component Video cables for interconnects, you cannot use (most) interconnects as component cables, they need to be 75 ohms

Prepare three yellow cables as they must be 75 ohm impedence, color two of them to green and blue, then try again. Meanwhile you need to read your DVD player and TV mannual again, you are probably required to set up the internal connection to component out/ in first.

Cables is not really a matter. The rest, James is completely right. In some DVD, you should set the DVD (from the menu) to YUV (component video) out to make it work.

Liem
