| Recommendations on for a pair of analog cables. | RichW Jun 17, 2002 8:09 AM | | Okay, I am fairly new to midfi equipment, and I have heard both sides of the cable argument. To be honest, I am of the initial belief that cables will not make a noticeable difference to me, however, instead of just believing it, I am going to test it.
I do not wish to enter a cable debate, I am just looking for a recommendation on which pair of cables to hook up from my cd player (and then later from my dvd player) instead of my radioshack cables.
I will only be testing in stereo, and I am not willing to spend more than $100 on a pair of audio cables to A/B test. I will have a friend hook up the cables in the back and let me hear them, so it will only be a single blind test, which is good enough for me.
If this matters, here is my system:
Carver C-1000A
B&W DM605S2's
Marantz 4000 OSE
Denon DVD 1600
I will do the test using both my CD player and my DVD players, just to give me two points of reference.
Also, my test music will be as follows:
Queen - In the Lap of the Gods
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Van Halen - Hot for Teacher
Al DiMeola, Paco de Luca, John McCoughlin - First song fron a Night in San Francisco
Focus - Answers! Questions? Questions! Answers?
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Sligh Return)
thanks for your recommendations in advance,

I know this might sound strange, but both of the above types of cables should be fine for analog audio. You can compare these to $100 aftermarket cables and see if there is a difference. Personally, I doubt it. |

| Test Music | Warren Warren Jun 20, 2002 6:00 PM | | While I certainly like your taste in music, some of your selections are a bit lacking in range to test ANY audio component, cables or otherwise. Even though they are CD's, and in theory faithful to the original recording, some of those orignal recordings were not the best quality to begin with. Some of this is due to advances in recording technology since the days of Hendrix and Tull, and others just due to overemphasis on the teenage market (i.e. Hot for teacher- great track, but very little dynamic range). Your equipment should certainly be up to the task of hearing differences if there are any. Just insure that the ambient noise level is as low as possible, and listen to the tracks at various volume levels. What you can do, if your DVD or CD has multiple outputs, is use one set of cables from one output to one input on your Carver, and another set of cables from the other output to another input on your Carver. This will keep you from having to switch cables, reduce "audio memory" effect, and as long as you are unaware of whether your freind is pressing "tape1" or "tape2", for example, the test should be fairly meaningful, if not statistically, at least to you. Some other brands to consider that were not mentioned:
IXOS, Outlaw, AR
Enjoy, and let us know the results.
