Nothing sobers like perspective....MonstrousMike

I just realized that our city council spent less time and used less people debating our new city non-smoking bylaw than we do arguing about wires!

There now that we have perspective, I'd like to comment that the skin effect in Litz wire is... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,...............snore........

Well, I can tell you that in Montgomery County, Maryland, the smokers/non-smokers debate about local ordinances has been raging for years, with thousands of people on both sides lobbying, carrying signs, and various legislations passed and repealed. For a while, there was a discussion prohibiting people from smoking IN THEIR CARS! They also mentioned that if you smoke outdoors ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY, and it disturbs a neighbor, you could get a fine. So, the 2 dozen or so of us regular wirenuts are really not that wacko! BTW, I don't smoke, but I can't agree with a lot of the overkill that takes place around here. We are TOO politically correct in this pit of politicians. Anyway, that's my 2-tenths of a dime.

That's quite a reversal of perspective. I think I heard of this story even here up in Canada. I mean, to think that tobacco smoke crossing an outdoor fence constitutes an un--neibourly intrusion, well, what's next? Really?

I've already produced the scenario, perhaps to be a movie of the week. We have three neighbours, from west to east, neighbour A, B, and C. Since the prevailing winds are from the west, neighbour A is sorta screwed because he affects both neighbours B and C.

So, anyways, neighbour A smokes cigarettes. On prevailing wind days, his pathetic carcinogens infect neighbour B's yard. Neighbour B is a dedicated barbequist, thereby passing carbon monoxide and lots of other chemical elements into neighbour C's yard. Neighbour C has trouble collecting the feces of his four St. Bernard dogs with all the BBQ smoke in his face.

The next day, the wind changes direction by 180 degrees.

To make a long story short, the only way the neighbours agree to settle this thing is to beat the crap out of each other.

Now what was it you were saying about those cables?

Hmmm,

Why wouldn't that be considered an intrusion? If my neighbor was playing music above a certain level, I could ask them to tone it down or call the police and request they come by to stop them from playing Frank Sinatra at 3 am so load that my window frames are lossing their ability to hold the glass panes in place.

If my neighbor was operating a blacksmith forge in their backyard I could complain about the smoke and smell.

Why should tobacco smoke be different? Heck, if I want to burn anything at all on my property I have to have a burning permit, which are only issued from Feb thru April.

What is so damn special about tobacco smoke?

(Pleae note, I present these questions for you to ponder, and do not make any claim as to their validity. Also do not assume this represents my optinion on the subject, maybe it does, and maybe it doesn't).

I think we have to accept at least a little bit or each other's quirks. If we go around saying things like "I don't like tobacco smoke wafting into my yard", we might as well all live in our own climate-controlled biodomes. We could interact electronically like we are now and never have to see each other face to face or smell each others' body odour or whatever else disgusts us about the next guy. Perhaps that's the way society is heading.

So, unless you are a perfect human being who doesn't affect any other human being in any negative way whatsoever, then I suggest since someone has to accept some part of you that affects them, you should return the favour.

But hey, I've been wrong before so who knows.

P.S. I quit smoking a long time ago.

Some people are extra sensitive to cigarette smoke and its repeated incursion onto somebody's property could present a real health issue. At best, it has a particularly noxious order.

BBQ smoke is not as offensive and is intermintent. Cigarette smoke can be almost constant, depending on the breeze.

Phoenix has a number of no-burn days during which wood-burning fireplaces cannot be used. In fact, I don't think any new home can even have a wood burning fireplace. Unfortunately, as we crowd together and polute the air, some reasonable regulation is required.

PS. I quit smoking 3 days ago, so I'm officially on my soapbox.

It's only a null hypothesis at this point in time. Very difficult to prove
