| Are there any reasonable priced cables with good shielding? | Kenk Jun 24, 2002 4:14 PM | | Hi All,
Last week I have tried out two pairs of expensive interconnect ($300 - $400 a pair) from my friend and I can hear a difference on back ground noise level. I basically connected the left side with the expensive interconnect and right side with my cheap AR interconnect between my amp and preamp. Next, I turned the volume all the way down, and compare the noise between my left and right speakers. After several testing with different configurations and cables, I concluded that my cheap interconnects are picking up more noise than my friends expensive cables. My question is are there any cheap (reasonable) priced interconnect that offers good shielding? I am very cheap and $300 - $400 is way too much for me.
Please advise.

With NO source, turn the volume all the way UP, so ALL that you are hearing is noise. You should be able to measure this with a sensitive SPL meter (but probably not a Rat Shack one) that will measure close to the theoretical noise floor. You should compare cables this way, on the same speaker. This should give you a measurable difference. You are quite possibly correct that this is a sheilding issue, but it's hard to tell since you are listening to 2 different speakers.
Secondly- AR makes 2 lines of interconnects, that don't vary that much in price- I believe the difference in price between a 3 foot pair is about $10-$15 for their better line. There are also a lot of other interconnects for $50 or less, such as Outlaw, IXOS, and of course, DIY.
Enjoy!

That's probably as much as you can hope for for good shielding. Prices are well below $50 for typical IC lengths. Or you could make your own out of this (or similar) wire, although getting decent tools will drive up the up-front cost. |

Often the source is hard to identify so you have to move it around by trial and error. I suggest before making any purchaces that you try this to see if it makes a difference.
Generally, Radio Shack cables are about as good as pne needs and are priced fairly low. Lately, I discovered that Dayton cables sold at www.partsexpress.com are of at least equal quality and cost a bit less. |
