Any comments on these wire claims?Richard Greene
Jul 10, 2002 7:06 AM
These words are from a catalog of audiophile
audio products. The company is well respected
for their primary products -- they recently started
selling wires, metal cones and some other tweaks.
Here are some of their claims for wires:

"I've heard $2,000 speakers with off-the-rack wires that sounded worse than little $100 Radio Shacks with good wire. ... WIRE IS A COMPONENT JUST AS CRUCIAL AS SPEAKERS OR AMPS. ... like your speaker cable, the cables that hook your CD player to your amplifier (the interconnects) affect sound quality just as much as your speakers. ... Odd as it may seem, laying audio cables on an artificial fiber carpet will immediately dull the sound of your stereo. ... Unfortunately, the carpet is a huge mass of low quality insulation (dielectric). It absorbs and smears energy from the field around the wire. The effect is pretty grim, making music sound both dulled and harsh. A simple
ear-tested solution is to raise the cables off the carpet by at least 8 inches."

Your comments please?

Sounds like marketing. Anybody who relies on marketing for ANY purchase is a fool.

So, who wants to start the nasty implications on non-naysayers and marketing? Bruce? Jim? Mtry? We gotta make RG happy with a debate, right?

I wasn't able to find suitable speaker cable raisers, so I lowered the concrete slab 8". What a difference! Now I don't bump my head on the ceiling anymore. And my speakers sound better too!

I've seen $50,000 BMW's with bad paint jobs that performed worse than $5000 Chevette's with designer paint. Paint is a component that is just as crucial as an engine in order to realize the ultimate performance of your car. And don't forget to use a brush that's at least 8 inches long.

Frankly, I raise my cables 12 inches off the carpet. I wouldn't want to be accused of "cable envy".

Having a hard time figuring who this well respected company is that would stoop so low. Hope it is not Paradigm, as they already have some snake comments about buy-wiring in their manual, or Dunlavy:)
I may call them on the carpet for this, or have The Audio Critic change them from the white hat guys to the black hat ones.

It's Mapleshade, producers of audiophile CD's, wire, isolation gear, etc. Just got my catalog today and read what Richard paraphrased above. They also enclose their wires in what appears to be plastic baggies. And you can blow them up! Er... not with TNT... unless you WANT to, but with your breath. Makes 'em sound better, kid you not. At least, that's the word on the street. And tens of tens of satisfied buyers can't be wrong :)

For anyone familiar (or not) with Mapleshade, they are not too far from D.C. They have a great recording studio where they record a lot of jazz, folk, and bluegrass, mostly acoustic music. They actually use the funky, super thin interconnects in the inflateable plastic baggies on their studio setup (mostly analog). Thier recordings are first rate, even if you don't care for the music. So, I would not doubt their word too much, as they seem (at least to me) to have very well trained ears and first rate equipment. I thought the interconnects were a little strange myself, but obviously they work. You may see some of their recordings mentioned on the Rave Reviews board.

I suspect it is other things they do (and don't do) that give them good sound; their wires are not the only thing involved in their recordings, and I suspect that their wires are unimportant to the whole process. Or to put this another way, their ability to make good recordings does not necessarily mean that even they know which things are important that they do and which are not; if the recording engineer has a rabbit's foot on his (or her) key chain, and believes that is important to good recordings, would you agree?

While I do not know all that goes into their recording process, I can at least tell you that they do it very well. Whether or not these cables have any bearing I cannot say for certain, but I can tell you that they use them. I don't think they manufacture these cables themselves, and in fact I saw a cable very much like it (if not the same one) on this board a while back. Everyone was joking about how it resembled a condom, and how expensive they were. So, I can only assume that since they make such excellent recordings that they have some idea of what they are doing, and if they took enough care to use a special interconnect, they probably have some reason for it.

Yes, they'd like to sell them to audiophiles :)More money in that.

Of course no. How could that be? Any evidence? :)

WOW, I am dumbfounded about the company. I don't have any of their CDs. Don't think I like the name :)

Check them out at www.mapleshaderecords.com. They have a special for first time buyers, buy 4 CD's and pay only $9.60 per. I have a few. They don't have much classical but they have some female vocalists you might enjoy. And while your at it, pick up some wire for your boombox. :)

I may check them out, thanks. If Richard likes their Cd quality, it must be good:)

Biege, black, white, electric blue

10 year non-stick but not non-slip

Stain and friction resistant

More likely you will see butt prints from slipping and falling on it

How can any of that matter if it it improves the quality of your system's sound?

I think I would elevate these wires off the floor as well, at least when listening barefoot after watering the plants. :-)

Sounds like a guy who's happy in his own little world. I suppose every once and awhile he'll bump into someone else there and this will validate his existance in his world.

I have a bunch of fish in a tank at home and I feel the same way about them.
