| good cable? what kind of insulation and material? spec.? | yucheng Jul 10, 2002 9:54 AM | | Just wondering how you determine a good sounding cable by looking at its specification.
is FEP (TEFLON) insulation the best?
is oxygen free copper a good shield?
Which conductor is a good one? how about silver plated copper?
Is there anyother things else to know?
Thanks for all responses.

Many on this board do not think any of what you mention would make a difference. So, I am giving this answer based on what is used to produce the more expensive cables. This is not to say that they are better sounding.
Teflon insulation would be better than PVC.
Silver plated copper and pure silver wire would be better than just copper.
I don't think that oxygen free copper has anything to do with being a good shield.
I am assuming that you are referring to interconnects. If you are going to spend a lot, many people espouse gold plated tips and copper based RCA connectors instead of brass or aluminum.
Good luck |

How? In what way?

How? In what way?

Supposedly. It also costs MUCH more. YMMV.
b is oxygen free copper a good shield?
Never seen shield listed as OFC. Copper shield would be the best, but check the percents for the real issue.
b Which conductor is a good one? how about silver plated copper?
Silver has better specs than copper. But copper ain't bad.
b Is there anyother things else to know?
Law of diminishing returns. |

Not even good science fiction :) |

Best for what? That is a realative statement. For audio, there is no reliable evidence it has a benifit of other insulation types when used in audio cables. If I needed something that required a higher breakdown voltage for a given thickness, good fire resistance, or high operating temperature requirements, then I would consider teflon type cables.
[is oxygen free copper a good shield?]
A good shield is always a good thing. Oxegyn free, again, no relieable evidence that you gain anything from it.
[Which conductor is a good one? how about silver plated copper?]
Again, why? What would you hope to benifit from it. You usually find silver plating in rf cabling where the energy is only on the very outside skin of the wire and you want to mimimize your losses for a given wire size. The copper core brings the cost down compared to solid silver in this case.
[Is there anyother things else to know?]
Yes, don't believe those who try and tell you otherwise without hard proof.
Thanks for all responses.]
Your welcome.
