Anyone familiar with these cables? Silver vs. Copper?rabmen
Jul 11, 2002 9:07 AM
Found a good deal on pure silver audio speaker cables, Monster M2.2, and Kimber 4tc at audiogon.com. Reviews on this site were very positive for the 4tc and Pure silver's, and limited in number for the M2.2's. Any opionions, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
System: Integra 7.2, Energy C-7 for fronts. I am primarily looking for a good balance of price and quality for my fronts right now.
Can anyone expalin what the allure of silver vs. copper is all about? I am just getting back into this game after a 14 year slumber.
Thanks for your input,
Rodney

As I understand it, silver has a very slightly higher conductivity than copper, but the main attraction for using silver in audio cables is that silver oxides theoretically are less of a problem for audio signals than copper oxides. These kinds of differences would only be audible to a discerning listener in a well-designed listening room with high-quality equipment. At this point in my audio career I can't justify the expense of interconnects or speaker cables with silver conductors.

I am not aware of any such evidence. Where can I cjecl out such evidence?

Silver is about 6% more conductive. For much less money, you can increase wire guage size, at least when it comes to speaker cable.

For interconnects, it's a non-factor.

There are unfortunately many urban myths regarding this issue, none of which have ever been borne out in fact.

Can you explain the allure of faith healing? Homeopathic medicines? Holistic healing?
Why would audio be exempt from hype, mythology or bs?
Or, it could be that silver is more valuable?

b I am just getting back into this game after a 14 year slumber.

Yep, much audio hype, bs, voodoo, mythology, urban legends in audio since then. Be very careful.

I tend to favour pure silver for interconnects. My answer is definitive.
