How do you guys who think...pctower

those of us who buy high end gear are just idiots, fools, or both, explain someone like Bill Joy:

http://www.audioasylum.com/scripts/t.pl?f=general&m=291434

Notice, BTW, he uses red rose 336 speaker wire which is (gasp!) bi-wired.

Actually, don't bother answering, as I already know your answer: he's got more money than God and is free to waste it however he chooses.

And, while we're at it, since numbers mean everything, and 5 speakers have to be better than 2, how do you explain this guy:

http://www.audioasylum.com/scripts/t.pl?f=general&m=291431

Oh, I know, he was duped by the 2-channel propaganda machine over at AA. His ABE's didn't even stand a chance.

I wonder, though, how did all those "thousands" he spent on HT gear fail to trigger ABE's that would lead him to believe that he had achieved audio nirvana and need never even consider 2-channel, non-mass-consumer-based gear?

...as to the second, HT just plain ol' sucks!

Case 1) He didn't go off and try and tell anyone that his set-up was superior to anyone elses, or make any other outrageous claims of sonic superiority. What's to argue with? It's just his system, period.

Case 2) It appears to me that this poster did not find that HT performed to HIS expectations, or those promoted by the advertizing. (Obviously he doesn't make the distinction here.) Again, what's the problem.

What's to argue with? Some here would, without challenge, label him as "terminally gullible":

What's the problem? Bruce, get with the program here. EVERYTHING SOUNDS THE SAME. This guy has to be a total fool to think his NAD stuff sounds better than what he had.

The original poster never made that claim, only that he was happy.

Has nothing to do with what you originally posted, nor what the person you quoted posted.

b The original poster never made that claim, only that he was happy.

Now Bruce, you scientific guys need to maintain accuracy. He said:

"I spent the money on a NAD integrated amp, NAD cd player, NAD dvd player, and B&W speakers. I now see the light and love music again!
b Dvd's sound better with quality 2-channel gear vs. consumer home theater gear.
I only wish I would have done this 2 years ago. Thanks again."

b Has nothing to do with what you originally posted, nor what the person you quoted posted.

It's one thing to label me an idiot, fool or terminally gullibe for buying the stuff I have. Quite another to apply the same labels to someone like Bill Joy.

Hmmmm.....read that twice and missed it twice.

Well, he might be right. How many are specificlly mixed for either a 5, 6, or 7 channel sound system?

If you read up on the industry, there is a lot of debate and as many techniques for mixing this format for the consumer.

I agree about the mixing. Done right, it seems to me 5 channel should be spectacular. But it has to be tough to guess how most people will set up their systems and mix for that particlar arrangement (or similar arrangements).

Actually, for me, sound in HT isn't critical. Just as radio is a more active medium than TV because it requires us to use our imagination to fill in the missing video, so too is HT a more passive medium than standard 2-channel stereo. It takes control of two of our senses and there is less chance the mind will wonder and find something to criticize.

But with both, the overriding factor that determines my enjoyment is the quality of the software. I suspect that's true for most.

Happy Columbus Day.

i Happy Columbus Day

Thanks, likewise.

Mine is spent with the possibility of traveling to Minnesota in a week or so.....

I just got back from visiting 4 cusatomers in three states.

Anyway...

i Done right, it seems to me 5 channel should be spectacular.

I agree wholeheartedly. In my customer visits, most of their problems were solved by correct set-up.

<blockquote>It's one thing to label me an idiot, fool or terminally gullibe for buying the stuff I have. Also, when money is irrelevant, what difference does it really make. He says hire somebody to put together a system for me, they hire the local "high-end" guru because he's "the best" and they spend a few hundred thousand or million of the guy's money. So what?

BTW, I thought you were leaving? Get real, PC, the only thing you like to do is create turmoil. You must be terribly bored.

And anyone can engage in wild speculation as you have just done.

b BTW, I thought you were leaving?

Are you always this sloppy with your facts? I said I was taking a new position that would prevent me from spending much time on audio boards, but that I would check in occasionally. Of all the audio boards, this particular one is the only one I post on any more.

b Get real, PC, the only thing you like to do is create turmoil.

No, you get real - you friggin jerk! Your manners are attrocious.

b You must be terribly bored.

I certainly would be if I had to depend on the likes of you to ever say anything interesting or thought-provoking.

Phil, Phil, Phil,

Thanks for proving my point. You're simply a provocateur. You do it at AA and you do it here. You love the attention you get from it. You love that people respond to you and that you can, metaphorically speaking, jump up in their faces when they do.

As to speculation, that's all your posts are about, speculating and asking people "what do you think?" It's tired and trite, but you seem to enjoy it.

Why do you ask the guy how much personal thought and energy he put into his system. I'm just saying that when folks get this much money they let others sweat the small stuff, they generally concentrate on making more money!

BTW, you might want to see your doctor, he can prescribe some valium for you!

Already have. What do you think I'd be like without it.

BTW, if I were seeking attention, I sure wouldn't choose AR or AA as the place to get it.
Well, a normal person wouldn't (nt)BluesDaddy
