| Monster Cable vs. Van Den Hul | Garon Oct 19, 2003 3:31 AM | | I need a speaker cable for my 3000 dollar music system (Rotel am&cd, bookshelf speakers). Most I can pay is 90 dollar per metre (28 dollars per foot) cable. I originally wanted to go with either Monster Cable's M1.2s or M2.2s but since a lot of people say Monster is commercial and overpriced I looked up van den Hul. On the other hand, van den Hul is european and not so familiar and Monster Cable, despite the bad words, has won many awards. What cable would you recommend me? |
| re: Monster Cable vs. Van Den Hul | mtrycrafts Oct 19, 2003 11:35 PM | | Actually, all you need is $.30/ft 12ga from Home Depot. Buy more music, not expensive wires. |
| re: Monster Cable vs. Van Den Hul | Beckman Oct 20, 2003 10:07 AM | | DON'T BUY LAMP CORD FROM HOME DEPOT.
I would suggest DH Labs Q-10. Or if you do want to save some money make your own speaker cables from Cat 5 cable . Whatever you do don't listen to mtrycrafts. He has obviously never tried anything other than lamp cord. |

b Whatever you do don't listen to mtrycrafts.
Ah, the truth comes out. You have no idea what you are talking about.

You are a psychic too? |
| re: Monster Cable vs. Van Den Hul | Beckman Oct 21, 2003 9:44 AM | | I apologize for what I said mtrycrafts. And you must be psychic because I really don't know what I am talking about. In fact I have been using 12 gauge monster cables with no problems for about ten years.
I try to justify the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on cables by encouraging people to purchase expensive cables on this forum. I am in college and near completion of an Engineering Physics Degree, and in all of the analog circuits and electromagnetic fields classes I have taken we havent been taught on how changes in both frequency and amplitude can affect the RLC characteristics of a cable. It does seem that most of the measurements of these cable characteristics are done using a RLC meter.
It could be that the characteristics of these cables change when current and a signal that varies with both frequency and amplitude is put through them in the same way that when you measure the resistance of a light bulb it shows infinite resistance, but you measure current flow with a voltage applied and using ohm's law the actual resistance is much less. Same with diodes, transistors, ect.
Again I apologize for my comments made earlier, and I should have not suggested that someone purchase cables that I have never listened to. |

If you used 12 ga Monster what is the problem then with 12 ga Home Depot cables? The are almost identical, for much less.
b I have taken we havent been taught on how changes in both frequency and amplitude can affect the RLC characteristics of a cable.
I think it is the other way around. The LRC characteristics of cable affects the frequency response. How much is measurable and can be calculated as well.

Listening to cables is worse than watching paint dry. In the end, paint dries. However, ones imagination is ongoing. |

I'm sitting here watching the sealer on our wood floors dry. My wife is sleeping in my sound room (concrete floors) and I'm sleeping outside with the rabbit who hates the fumes worse than I do.
On the other hand, a few more hours of these fumes and no telling where my imagination will take me - the rabbit will be singing Pucini and Wagner. |

"ehhhhh, What's up doc?"

| LOL | mtrycrafts Oct 23, 2003 6:07 PM | | Too funny for words :)
But then I didn't comment on listening to music:) Go inside and just listen to music :) |
| LOL | pctower Oct 23, 2003 9:58 PM | | Tomorrow's the big day. After 4 nights outside with Bugsy, anything will sound good.
Unfortunately, I'm not kidding.
From all I can tell, Bugsy is also more than ready to return to sleeping on the hearth in front of the fireplace. |

| re: Monster Cable vs. Van Den Hul | Billiam Oct 20, 2003 12:17 PM | | I personally would go with Vampire Wire ST-III, 8 gauge continuous cast copper at 19.95 a foot if I was going to spend that kind of money for speaker cables. |
| $19.95/ft? Insanity nt | mtrycrafts Oct 20, 2003 11:58 PM | | nt |

| YOU WANNA PAY WHAT?!?!? | FLZapped Oct 21, 2003 9:52 AM | | That's insane. Sorry, but you won't get your money's worth.
Stick with stuff that comes in under $0.50/ft. it'll work just as well and give your wallet a rest.
