| please help out a newbie - long | baltik Oct 31, 2003 12:02 AM | | Ok so I am completely new to this,
I purchased a set of Definitive BP-10 speakers (tonight) to be used in a home theater/music system. It just dawned on me that my 16 gauge OFC copper wires aren't going to do it. Now mind you, I am still running cheapo bose surrounds so cash is tight and $100 is my limit, further complicating matters is due to the positioning of the receiver and big screen tv I will need the cables to be at least 12' in length. After an evening's search I am leaning toward these:

They are long enough 10 gauge and appear to be good quality (once again I don't know what to look for). SO my question, can I get something comprable for cheaper or better in the same price range? |

What gave you the idea that your 16 gauge OFC copper wires "weren't gonna do it"? Quite simply not true - hogwash - bullshit!
While it is true that a larger gauge of wire will increase the efficiency of signal transfer, it will NOT result in "better sound" - only more efficiency. Only when the runs from the amplifier to the speakers are of far greater distance than what you have does such efficiency begin to become meaningful. For a distance of only 12 ft. the gauge of the wire is of little concern.
These wires you're considering are overkill, overpriced, AND are being marketed with a heavy dose of "technobabble" designed to make them sound worth spending your cash on. Save your money. If your present wires are old and possibly somewhat corroded, you can get 12 gauge speaker wire from such places as Home Depot for around $.50 ft. or less which will suit your needs perfectly - no need to spend any more. Banana plugs are easily obtained also if you want to use them. The main advantage in using banana plugs is for conditions where connecting and disconnecting happens frequently.
Hope this helps you

You can probably find the needed connectors at rat shack or parts express(online retailer). Of course, some home centers now carry the connectors as well...not all of them though, so it's hit and miss.
In any event, 10 guage(AWG) is an overkill. Actually, your 16 guage stuff is probably fine.

As stated above, your 16ga is sufficient for a 12 ft run, or even further.
There are lots of audio bs, mythology, voodoo to wade through, this cable is one of them.
If you think you need more speaker wire, anything over $.50/ft is too much. |
