Component Video Cablesmichaelmarshall

I just got a new Sony Grand Wega HD tv. I now want to hook it up using component video cable. I am going to use what mtrycraft had suggested to me awhile back - 3 RG6 cables.

I have noticed that some RG6 is terminated with silver F connectors while others have gold plated F connectors. I am basically going to use screw on gold plated RCA connectors on each end to connect my satellite receiver and dvd to the tv.

My question is should I be concerned with RG6 having no gold F connectors? Is this going to degrade my video picture? If I use gold plated F connectors will it improve my picture?

Thanks,

Michael

Michael:
To answer your questions:

b "My question is should I be concerned with RG6 having no gold F connectors?"

No, not at all.

b "Is this going to degrade my video picture?"

No, not at all.

b "If I use gold plated F connectors will it improve my picture?"

No, not at all.

The gold plating of audio and video connectors has no effect whatsoever on picture or sound quality. It only does two things:
1. looks nice
2. provides a bit of protection against corrosion - but unless you live where the corrosion of metals is a BIG problem, it's pretty much a non-issue.

Hope this helps you

P.S. Congrats on following mtrycrafts (and my) advice regarding the use of RG-6 coax cables as "component video" cables rather than succumbing to the ill-advised advice of some people to buy expensive alternatives.

That's great. Thanks for your help.

I went through this whole process before with audio cables and as per mtrycrafts recommendations I found no difference in my sound quality using RG6 for my interconnects. This saved me a lot of money and a lot of hassle selecting good cables when radio shack RG6 works great.

I appreciate both of your comments as I have read your comments throughout this forum. It's one thing to read about it but when you actually see it work in real life, it is eye opening. Thanks to both of you guys!

Cheers,

Michael

I'm also in the market for component video cable. What are rg6 cables?

RG-6 are coax cable that have excellent bandwidth. But the down side is, they are thick, not too flexible and might be an over kill to be used as component cable.

RG-59 coax cable have less bandwidth than RG-6, but have more than enough to handle component video. They are not too thick, extremely flexible and more user friendly (and might cost less). Just be sure it is 75 ohm :)

... they are the "TV" cables used to hookup TV antennas to TV sets, or cableTV, or satellite TV, or a VCR to a TV set via the "antenna terminal". They are to be found in most any hardware store, or Home Depot, or Wal-Mart, or Target, or RadioShack, or any other consumer electronics retailer.

They come in various lengths and are already fitted with the "F" type connectors (screw-on), and there are "F to RCA" adaptors to convert them for use as "component video" or "digital audio" use.

Clear?
