CON-ART-ists @ B_S_B__! Monster This, Monster That~nimik

I feel so ashamed.

All was good...I just bought a 50" Sony WEGA LCD Rear Projection TV...sleek and exciting! And a Yamaha Home Theater Sound Sys...crisp and thrilling! All's good with the purchase...No buyer's remorse with the mega buy. UNTIL...

HOWEVER, everyone at the store was so CON-fident about the 'must-have' for a superb Monster power protection ($149.99) and the 'should-have' for a Monster video cable and MonsterBass subwoofer cable and Monster 100ft.speaker cables.

MOREOVER, everyone at the store was so ART-iculate in presenting & seeding FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) on conventional surge protection and conductor of electrical signals.

I should have just stuck with my gut feel and educated guess that these "Monster Spaghetti & Meatballs" is all about preservatives and just a PLACEBO.

Monster offers HUGE incentives to push their stuff. this includes an all expense paid week at their masion for a dozen or so top salesmen, where you can play with all the goodies, including some rather exotic muscle cars.....

You didn't mention Extended Warranty. This is another product in the category of extrememly expensive for the return.

Mike,

I'm kind of ambivalent on the Extended Warranty. I've had an experience where it has saved me a few bucks (net). Then again, it's an insurance. Some form of an expensive "peace of mind". I'm not sure how everyone else would think, but I actually paid the $300 service plan for the $3100 TV and $100 on the $750 Home Theater Sys.

What's your take on the Extended Warranty?

Thanks.

MonstermanMike should've qualified his statement about EWs. If he chooses to let it stand, then I must vehemently disagree with him. I spent more than 55 years servicing consumer electronics, so I know more than nearly everybody about the issue. Consumer electronics today is VASTLY more complicated than it's ever been in the past. At the very same time, the products are being built cheaper and cheaper and cheaper! Also thrown into this mix is the fact that competent service techs are getting fewer and fewer by the day!

Boiling it down further, if you expect more usable life out of a product than just a yaer or so, then an extended warranty should be something to consider strongly. RPTVs - especially HDTV capable ones are very vulnerable when it comes to needing service. A/V receivers - not nearly as likely. Loudspeaker systems - virtually never (except for possibly a powered subwoofer). CD players and DVD players and VCRs are all quite vulnerable, but they've come so far down in price that they've become what is known as "commodity product". You use one 'til it breaks down - then you chuck it in the trash and buy another.

So what are the particulars on the warranties you bought? How many years? AFTER the mfg. warranty expires, or from the date of sale? Is replacement of a really troublesome product promised? Who's gonna be doing the actual service? All of these questions can determine whether a warranty is worthwhile or not.

Of course, there's yet another aspect to this question. That is, that electronics have become so cheap and such bargains that a purchased warranty should just become part of the selling price - buying what the mfg.
b should
have given you in the first place, but he simply couldn't and still meet his "price-point". Ah, the absurdity of marketing!
