| Men of Honor is a keeper | Max Apr 12, 2001 9:18 AM | | If you like the recent DVD release of Remember the Titans, then you will want Men of Honor also. This is another movie based on a true story. It is about a man's triumph over adversity, and his will to never give up and never take no for an answer.
The movie has an all star cast in Robert DeNiro, Cuba Gooding, and Charlize Theron. The DVD has great video/audio that Fox is known for (Aliens, Courage Under Fire, X-men) and is full of commentaries, deleted scenes, alternate ending, and my favorite...an interview with the real Dive master himself. If you have not seen this movie, it is definately worth a rentally, but I think it is a keeper. What do you all think? |
| "I AM GOD!!!!" | Adam Apr 12, 2001 10:11 AM | | Having not seent it in the movies but loving Deniro and Cuba I bought it. I was rivetted and locked in one place the whole time. An excellent movie. Deniro was good but Cuba was great. |
| To each his own | Eyespy Apr 13, 2001 6:28 AM | | I couldn't disagree more. This movie could cure insomnia, and even worse, is totally forgettable, IMO. Not one of DeNiro's finest moments, which is more reflective of the awful script, and Cuba Gooding is reason enough to avoid this movie in the first place, as are most if not all of the movies he appears in, with the exception of Boyz In The Hood. |

Funny you should say that. They showed it during an airline flight... put me right to sleep. It didn't seem very interesting for the first 20-30 minutes that I managed to stay awake. Perhaps it got more interesting in the rest of the movie. I might go rent it again just to see if I was right. |
| Eyespy I love You Witty Remarks | Adam Apr 13, 2001 9:33 AM | | Definitely not a Deniro best, but I really did think Cuba was pretty damn good and the guy who plays Hanks was a real prick. Cuba was at his best in Boyz in the Hood. |
| Eyespy I love You Witty Remarks | Eyespy Apr 14, 2001 8:11 AM | | Eh..can't help it, I'm made in da Bronx! Whaddayagunnado? Fugeddaboudit, eh? Thanks :-) |
| Men of Honor is a renter for myself. | Tweeter Apr 16, 2001 9:52 PM | | I didn't mind the movie as a rental viewing. It was entertaining enough. This movie has taken a hit by other posters as boring...can't say as I agree with that...however I thought Charlize Theron was miscast for the role as Sunday's wife. That made no sense. I would give the movie 3/5 stars personally. |
| One of the reasons I didn't like it... | Keith from Canada Apr 17, 2001 6:06 AM | | I was very disappointed by the character development throughout the film. Charlize Theron appears as the ignored Navy wife who hates her husband in one scene and the next scene she appears in (late in the movie), she's standing by her husband through thick and thin!?! Also, Cuba's love interest goes from his tutor to his wife without us even getting to see any growth between the two at all?!?
I would imagine that the number of deleted scenes dealing with character development on this film would fill a large locker. I personally dislike movies that require the viewer to fill in those types of gaps. |
| Funny You Should Say That | Adam Apr 17, 2001 10:11 AM | | Indeed in the deleted scenes section of the DVD there is discussion as to why those scenes were left out. Basically what it came down to was to have all the scenes that Tillmann wanted in the movie the movies would have been roughly 3 hours and 10 minutes which unfortuantly was too long to keep the users attention as shown by focus groups. There is a deleted scene that shows the whole relationship develop and there is a love scene. Tillman felt the movie was about Sunday and Brasheer and Brasheers desire to be the best, his love interest took a back seat. |
| It should have been 3 hours and 10 minutes long then... | Tweeter Apr 17, 2001 9:59 PM | | I watched the deleted scenes and they helped to fill in some of the blanks that were placed throughout the movie. It always comes down to a trade-off between the attention span of the focus groups and the film makers wishes to cover all the important events and present a thorough development of the main characters. Inevitably, the focus group got their way with this movie. There was another movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance" that suffered the same shallow character development that marred it's potential as a great movie too. Ultimately, the premise of the movie was Brashear's persistence and determination to beat the odds and be the best he could be
it's unfortunate the film didn't do the same. However, I still don't regret watching it
there was some good qualities in the man and his story. |
| That's funny | Max Apr 18, 2001 6:26 AM | | It's funny that some critics did not like the movie because it was "too long and boring", while others like yourself, thought it needed more character developement, which according to the focus group took away from the main theme and made the movie "too long and boring". I felt that the movie focused well on his professional life which is what they wanted to show the world and the DVD (deleted scenes) showed a little more character developement. I am glad they did not go with the alternate ending.
I did feel the movie was far from boring since it is the first time that I have got a glimpse into the life of deep sea divers on the big screen. I never knew that those suits weighed so much. I think the last movie I saw with any kind of deep sea theme was "The Abyss" and the scene with the rat breathing in that pink liquid still gets me. |
| Just so you know... | Keith from Canada Apr 18, 2001 7:38 AM | | the dive suits used in that era were far different from the dive bell suits that were portrayed in the movie. Heavy yes but the whole hose and air pump thing was finished before the end of WWII when tanks were brought into service. |
| Cuba Gooding Jr | Over50 Apr 18, 2001 8:39 AM | | Same scared look on his face he had in instinct kinda predictable. |
