| How can they stand it? | Daigoro Apr 15, 2001 7:06 PM | | I was over at a girlfriend of mine's house the other day and was forced to watch movies on her system. What a freakin nightmare! An old 25" JVC TV with mono sound and some crappy Sony DVD player that decodes so poorly that some of the text on the screen is illegible and the colors look like a bad VHS tape. We had to turn the sound way up to make any sense of the dialogue in Rounders, and the widescreen made the picture so small it may as well have been on a bazooka gum wrapper!
I'm going to have to officially upgrade the importance of picture and sound with regards to my enjoyment of movies. I guess I just got spoiled and didn't realize how bad most people have it out there. |

I can see some similarity with how you feel, and how I feel when I have a pretty good setup and then get a DVD that is of poor quality. Although picture and sound is not everything, I do expect it on a DVD for the most part.
I too have had friends finally get a DVD player and express how they will never go back to VHS, but they are still missing half the experience (sound) by having the player hooked up directly to their mono TV. Ohh well, eventually when they do get a good digital reciever, they can re-watch all their movies and realize the full potential of their DVDs. |

| re: How can they stand it? | paranoid Apr 16, 2001 5:55 PM | | It works both ways. A friend and his wife came over my house last weekend. I had recently splurged on the kind of setup I have been saying I would get(nothing over the top). My friend had been saying he was going to get a DVD player and a basic stereo, but his wife was iffy. The have a small TV, and a 12 year old VCR.
One good movie at our house and a few comments like "this is like a movie theater" (I felt a tear of joy forming) and she was sold. He ordered a nice system last weekend. |

I know to you the worse part of that story is that the movie was Armegeddon :), but regardless, I couldn't go through with it. BUT, this friend is not doing well financially, so I am sure to him that setup will do just fine. What's that saying, "You don't know what you're missing." |
