| Billy Elliot vs Space Cowboys | Max Apr 18, 2001 6:34 AM | | Well, these are the 2 releases on DVD this week and I was wondering if any one has seen either or both of these movies and can tell me which if either is worth renting or buying. I have heard a lot about Billy Elliot, but a seeing a few of the "expert's" picks, I have decided that I trust you all here a lot more (for the most part)....ha ha. |
| re: Billy Elliot vs Space Cowboys | Daigoro Apr 18, 2001 11:04 AM | | I've seen both. I just rented Billy Elliot last night and thought it was pretty good. Very likeable kid main character and some good performances.
I saw Space Cowboys in the theater and thought it was a mixed bag. Despite the very appealing cast, it started to wear thin about half way through and the plot got just plain silly. |

| Space Cowboys...a lame story concept | Tweeter Apr 22, 2001 9:46 AM | | Obviously a totally ridiculous idea...old farts piloting the space shuttle and saving the world...and I knew this before I rented this DVD, so my expectations were realised. However, it was cool to see all these award winning actors together on the screen together albeit below their skill level but hey,Â…it's Hollywood. The first half of the movie was nothing specialÂ…before the launch there is enough light humour to pass the time and the movie feel is like that of Armageddon, rounding up unlikely citizens to be heroes, making a joke out of the Space program. There is tension and personality conflicts between characters that round out the "dramatic" element. The second half of the movie gets a bit more interesting thanks to the folks at Industrial Light and Magic with their awe inspiring visual effects that looked at real as I could imagine it. The DVD extras have a bit on the special effects as well. I won't give the ending away, but there are no surprises, just "cowboy heroics". In summary, if you want to watch a light-hearted comedy/science fiction/action-adventure movie and have a couple of hours to kill and low dramatic expectations then rent this one. It's rated for all ages to view so the whole family could watch it together. |
