Do MGM DVDs suck sh... or is it just me?Max

I owned one MGM DVD, Highlander and I had to get rid of it due to the WORST video transfer I have ever seen. And the Dolby Digital 0.0 ES sound was just too much for my receiver. Special Edition my as...!

Anyways, I was looking at getting the Rocky series (1-5) at Best Buy for ~$54. I heard that each one was supposed to be in 5.1 and have both standard and widescreen formats (DVD Express). But being that the movies were from MGM I was skeptical. I took the box set to the front counter and had them open it. I found that 1,3, and 4 were in 5.1 but 2 and 5 were surround only. Some of them were in standard, while others were widscreen. Some did have both formats. I got the guy to play the first Rocky and it looked pretty good, but when he played Rocky 2, it looked a little grainy. It was kind of hard to tell since the TV was behind the counter, and it was a 17".

I was wondering if anyone purchased the set, and if so, how is the video on each? Also, are there any good movies from MGM in terms of video and audio transfer? How did they do on When Harry met Sally? I hear that WB is doing the same thing to the Superman set. The first one will be cleaned up and in 5.1 and the others won't. Can't anyone make a decent collection!?!

The World Is not Enough is on par with some of the best non-dts releases. Picture and audio are, as always, first-rate but the movie itself is an entirely different matter..
I'll Agree With ThatAdam

WINE, Tomorow Never Dies, and Goldeneye are great transfers...and Goldfinger ain't too shabby either.

Rocky V - Surround Sound Only - Enhanced Widescreen; not a bad picture, not great either.

Rocky IV - If you have previously owned the Rocky IV that was released years ago it it is the same freaking DVD, which means the Audio is decent and the picture is ok.

Rocky III - The transfer was excellent, the rear speaker tracks are the best of the 5, as is the audio.

Rocky I - Better transfer than the last time Rocky I was released and the audio is ok at best.

Rocky II - I haven't watched it yet I only had time to disect the I, III, IV, and V last night. I'll let you know when I know.

The point is this: If you were a fan of the Rocky series it's worth the 62.00 shipped from amazon, if you aren't then don't waste your time or money.

Yes, please let me know how Rocky 2 compares with the rest, since this is the one I previewed. It is just aggravating that they cannot clean up, do a digital transfer, and make 5.1 sound for some DVDs. That is the whole reason to upgrade your VHS collection to DVD. I currently use my Highlander DVD as a frisbee for my dogs.

Ok well you have two options when you watch Rocky II, one side is the widescreen and the other is full screen. The video transfer on the widescreen is amazing considering how bad the old Rocky II DVD was. The audio is subpar though. It't pro logic and unlike Rocky V which is also pro-logic the rear speakers have little or now sound.

The 4:3 transfer ain't bad but it totally pales in comparison to the widescreen. It's worth it to buy the collection if you can get it for 60.00 I mean your only talking 12.00 a movie.

mgm has gotten better since the days of yore, but they are still touch and go regarding things. they now are putting out maximum output but about 60% of it is decent, not exemplary like new line or fox. they do do good transfers and if it is labeled as a special edition expect to find an anamorphic transfer and some decent features. i'd say that because the pricetag for mgm titles is so cheap you get what you pay for, but it's on the top end of that scale.
