| DTS Cds | Max Apr 25, 2001 7:10 AM | | I also noticed some DTS CDs at my local Best Buy (Eagles, Fleetwood,..etc) and was wondering if anyone has bought and tried them. Do they require the 5.1 ouputs like DVD audio or do they just go through the digital out and get decoded by the receiver like normal? How do they sound compared to DVD audio? |

I personally have found them to be a great way to listen to music. It adds alot and really makes you feel that you're on stage with the band. If you're interested, most people start with the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DTS DVD and, if they like that, they generally wander over to the DTS CDs (the DVD and DTS CD version of "Hell Freezes Over" are identical in the audio department).
I personally prefer the CDs over the DVDs. I find that the picture takes away from the sound (we're more dependent upon our visual senses than our hearing senses). Although a DVD and CD are the same, it's much easier to hear the music when you are not bothered by a picture. |

I really enjoy the concerts on DVD, especially in DTS. It's great to watch those musicians and know how much talent it takes to play music that well. I have a 27" monitor and 27 speakers in 7 cabinets on my main system. It's not the size of the screen, it's the quality of the sound!! Oh yeah, Sherwood Newcastle 100x5 for main receiver, and Optimus (Pioneer) 150x2 on bi-amp pushing passive subs with 150hz cutoffs. Subs are 4x6.5" woofers each with 8" passive radiator on each side for ambience on all four sides. Check home theater discussion for a great site for DTS from Max Cast. |

The surround stuff could be awesome but I prefer the sound of old-fashioned CD 2-channel music; I think some of the detail in the music presentation is lost when they use DTS. Also not a big fan of "synthetic" place-you-in-the-middle-of-the-band recordings which is not indicative of the live experience. Maybe when they go to DVD-A (which allegedly will not use lossy compression techniques used by DTS and Dolby digital) or multi-channel SACD, will I consider a strictly music surround sound experience; this will take a while as I think industry is still feeling their way around on how to make best use of high-resolution multichannel surround mixing. My current interest caters to high resolution, non-compressed 2-channel in addition to video DTS. |
