Why did I think this was a great movie?DOM
Apr 30, 2001 5:12 AM
I watched Blade Runner on DVD on the weekend, had been looking forward to it since I put it on hold at my local library (btw sure beats Blockbuster - 7 day loan, $0). I had last watched it when it first came out almost 20 years ago and remembered it as being very interesting and thought-provoking. Something seems to have happened either to the movie or to me in the meantime. I would now classify it as a good timewaster if you had nothing better to do for two hours - hardly a must see. I found the plot and characters quite superficial as neither seemed to develop after the first 1/2 hour or so. After the first hour I found myself checking my watch every few minutes, anticipating the end.

I would however give full marks for the creation of the movie's oppressive atmosphere (presumably by intent) which was well conveyed visually. Some of the street scenes were especially striking in terms of their visual impact.

Maybe the fact that you're 20 years older has someting to do with it. This also could explain so many people's reactions to Phantom Menace. While this is certainly no work of great art, I think people around my age expected the same thrill they got when they were 9 years old. If this had been the first movie, people would be pretty happy with it. Maybe.

it was like that 20 years ago. But the movie does have some thought provoking quality. Thus you think "I had last watched it when it first came out almost 20 years ago and remembered it as being very interesting and thought-provoking."

Most likely, when you watched it 4 the first time you were just as bored as you did 20 years later. It just has alot of element to digest in one sitting. Twice is more than enough.
May be Mad Max will help with the nostalgy (nt)Mr Q

Did you watch the director's cut this time? (without the harrison ford voice over in the movie). I had the same problem, only being able to see the 'director's cut' which i hated and found very boring without the ford voice overs running through the film.
And btw, does the non-director's cut exist on dvd?

No reg ver yet, suppose to be released later maybe 2002 with all ver's on DVD. I hated the director's cut too. I still think its one of the best SCI-FI cyber punk style movies made. Even with some of its plot problems. Accounting for the missing REP is one that really bugs me. Rachel was not one of the six that landed on earth. One got fried trying to get into Tyrel Corp that leaves 5 but you only get to see 4 thru the movies. Also with the final editing where Deckard's bruises are in one shot and not in another later on. I got many copies of this film on a lot of formats but no DVD yet. I got a BETA, VHS, S-VHS, Criterion LD (the BEST one) and the Directors Cut on LD. Cant wait till Ridley Scott get thsi remastered for DVD. Also wish he could get around to doing his Nepolean era film "The Duelist".

I thought the fact that there is one REP not accounted for is supposed to suggest that Decker himself is a REP? Any thoughts?
