| Shawshank Redemtion | puffum May 4, 2001 10:14 PM | | I just finished watching Shawshank for I believe to be the 6th time. I still fail to see how it could not have won several major awards (it only won 1 award - tied for Best English Language film - National Film Review Board, nominated for 7 Academy Awards) What did win in '94 anyway? And although I loved The Green Mile, I feel this was Stephen King's best story and Frank Darabont's best adaption/directing. What were the 7 nominations? I know best picture - was it actor and supporting actor also? The whole cast should have been nominated... This movie moves me in everyway possible everytime I watch it. Guess I better put this one above the Deer Hunter as my #1 of all time - unless I watch that one again sometime soon...lol Oh well - sorry for my little rant. Anybody else got any thoughts on this one? Follow your dreams... PEACE |
| Puffum With You All The Way... | Adam May 5, 2001 12:31 AM | | The music was perfect, Morgan Freeman amazing, and Tim Robbins just simply perfect. I also happen to think that the Green Mile did not receive the recognition it deserved, Michael Clark Duncan was damn good. I think Steven King just get's overlooked.
Here's is a link that will tell you who won what in 94. |
| BTW... | Adam May 5, 2001 12:34 AM | | 94 Was The Year Of Forrest Gump...damn good in it's own right. |
| 1994 | Thursby May 5, 2001 6:55 AM | | 1994 was an interesting year for film. Forrest Gump was a cultural phenomenon and box office success which made it the Oscar favorite. Pulp Fiction was the critics' darling and a trendsetter in terms of structural storytelling. Shawshank Redemption was met with indifference when first released. Perhaps it was the title, hardly compelling unless you were familiar with Stephen King's Novella. It was however embraced by the Hollywood establishment and received 7 Academy Award nominations. Although it didn't win any awards, this recognition spawned a cult following which has grown over the years. |
| I guess a great year for flicks... | puffum May 5, 2001 10:52 PM | | even though I wasn't crazy about Gump the 1st time around (took 2 or 3 viewings) - but could appreciate it's artistic value. And I can't believe I forgot PF was that year...but I still think Shawshank shined above those two - just my opinion, obviously... |
| I guess a great year for flicks... | PJ May 6, 2001 9:08 AM | | I agree, Shawshank still makes almost every persons "top 10" list, it is that good.
It did however perform terribly at the box office. |
| I guess a great year for flicks... | Brotherman-5th floor May 6, 2001 12:58 PM | | Yet a POS like The Mummy Returns is probably a blockbsuter. Go figure. |
| You watched Gump 3 times? | Umrswimr May 7, 2001 10:19 AM | | It was entertaining the first time, but there's no way I could watch it a second time. Let alone a third. |
| You watched Gump 3 times? | puffum May 7, 2001 12:09 PM | | The first time was at the theatre, and I wasn't crazy about it. The second time, just wanting to see if there was something I wasn't getting the first time - giving another chance. The third - satisfy the girlfriend, and yes, we broke-up soon afterwards! There won't be a fourth, trust me! |
| You watched Gump 3 times? | jesse May 7, 2001 8:42 PM | | forrest gump was shite. there's no way around that. drivel from the mind of a has-been. by the by, if you take a look at the academy awards in recent years all the winners are not deserving of it. there have been/are much better films which didn't even get nominated in each year and yet the shite or moderite-shite ends up winning. where was fight club in '99? where was requiem for a dream in '00? the a.a. are not the things to go by. just feel that it was a good thing that shawshank didn't win because then it would have to share the podium with shite like unforgiven, dances with wolves, driving miss daisy, schindler's list, out of africa, tearms of enearment (and those are just the best picture winners)... need i go on? |
| O.K., I'll bite... | gle_helle May 8, 2001 7:43 AM | | What was wrong with Schindler's List? Try to answer without mentioning any of Speilberg's other titles. |
| My Problem Was | Adam May 8, 2001 10:07 AM | | It put me to bed within the first 35 minutes. I think the only reason it won best picture that year had to do with the topic of the hollocast not neccessarily how great the movie was itself. For the academy to deny a movie BY Spielberg and about the ever sensitive subject of the Hollocast would have been a huge bad publicity bit. Couple that with the fact that there really wasn't any other GREAT movie that year besides the Piano and you have your Oscar Winner For Best Picture. |
| i agree | jesse May 9, 2001 12:21 AM | | yes. the prologue and coda to schindler's list was aweful pretentious cripe. no reason for them. same with the little girl in the red dress--what, we can't keep characters straight in a black and white film anymore? if he did that to give the audience a reference point in the film on the jewish side in the streets he should have gotten a better script which did that without having to indulge his over-large ego by doing something quazi-experemental in a "mainstream" hollywood film. without mentioning his other work, that's what i think about schindler's list in a nutshell. don't get me wrong, i think that it was important that it was made, and seen. the acting is fine, et cetera and so forth, but it doesn't deserve the accolades that was given to it. |
| Jesse See The Thing Is | Adam May 9, 2001 9:43 AM | | The holocast was a horrible horrible thing, I'm not going to argue that, but was it any different than what was being attempted in Bosnia? If Spielberg had made a movie about the gencidal actions that took place in Bosnia 2 things would have happened:
1. Critics and the public would have chastised him fot not doing a movie on the Holocost.
2. The movie would have won 0 awards. |
| Jesse See The Thing Is | jesse May 9, 2001 10:20 AM | | slight differences between wwii and bosnia, but that's for historians, i guess--i.e. not spielberg. i'm not even arguing that he shouldn't have made this film or that he should have made another film about another war instead (s.p.r. was the worst piece of shite that i have seen this side of the trainspotting bathroom, you know the one, that piece of shite that was on the floor to the left of the screen that he almost stepped on when going in...?) i'm just saying that it doesn't deserve the accolaides that it has gotten. |
| Definitely right about the ac. awrds. | Kam May 8, 2001 12:15 PM | | you've hit that one on the money, but not just for recent years. one of my fav. movies, scarface, did not receive a single nomination, despite pacino's creation of one of the most memorable characters around. anyone want to start that thread, best movies, performances, etc. never nominated?
my vote goes to scarface. (best everything, picture, actor, screenplay, supporting actor, actress - probably michelle pfieffer's best role). |
| I'll 2nd that nomination... | puffum May 8, 2001 12:25 PM | | Aren't they coming out with a DVD re-issue? |
| There is a Widescreen release, not sure if another one is coming | Kam May 8, 2001 1:24 PM | | http://store.universalstudios.com/globalnav/gnf.asp?url=http%3A//store.universalstudios.com/superstore.asp%3FSSID%3D999%26SID%3D0%26CID%3D0%26PID%3D1222
"And now the leg..." so classic.... |
| bad copy | jesse May 9, 2001 10:23 AM | | the problem with the universal disc out it that the image is one of the worst looking discs out there. they just released a new edition with the same features over in europe which looks great and it's anamorphic, but it's a region 2 disc so you all know what that means... |
| re: Shawshank Redemtion and IMDB.COM | Willson May 9, 2001 11:29 PM | | Check out IMDB.com and their top 250 movies and you'll know the power of the Shawshank Redemption. It's my favorite movie - period. The DVD is disappointing because it didn't really have anything (esp. director commentary). Shawshank, although a failure at the box office, has a strong cult following now with many fan web sites. I'm happy that others felt as strongly as the movie as I did. Why can't Darabont do something special for the DVD. I'll buy it again if he does. |
| re: Shawshank Redemtion and IMDB.COM | Anime Guru May 10, 2001 8:09 AM | | I love that it landed in the #2 position and Lucas' damned Star Wars only made #8!!! HA HA HA Lucas you money hungry bastard. (I despise ole Georgie in case you hadn't noticed.) |
