| dvds or films? | jesse May 7, 2001 8:22 PM | | just a question: would people rather see a dvd at home or the same movie in the theatres? i.e. say, for purely hypothetical reasons, that star wars episode II were to come out day and date in the theatres and on dvd, which would you see and why? say, in the same hypothetical world, that gangs of new york was also a day and date in theatre and on dvd release, which would you see and why? and also, if there is a difference between these two answers, what makes you decide to go to see one and buy the other? just curious. |
| re: dvds or films? | manny May 8, 2001 9:11 AM | | In most cases, I would much rather stay at home and watch a movie on DVD versus going to a theater for many reasons. First of all, I can start the movie when I want to instead of their time schedule. I can also pause it for a break. I choose the company I watch the movie with. And, my home system sounds better than any movie theater I've been in, save one, IMAX. And, if I buy the DVD, I have it to watch again. Have you seen ticket prices lately, not to mention popcorn, drinks, etc.? This is why home theater is such a popular item these days, including the well-to-do who build complete theaters in their home. |
| I agree with your points, but not your conclusion. | A May 8, 2001 11:17 AM | | The picture is much better in a good theatre than any DVD on a TV (I've seen some pretty expensive TVs, much better than what I have, but they are no where near as good as a film). The size and quality of film cannot (yet) be beat. Still, there are times when watching at home is what I choose to do, for the reasons you mention (not to mention the fact that the film I wish to see at a particular time may not be playing at a local theatre). |
| re: dvds or films? | Kam May 8, 2001 2:22 PM | | Well, at the theaters that actually do the close and opening of the curtains, it may just be my nostalgia, but i like to watch the lights dim, the curtains raise and the previews begin. (and untill i get that front projector and curtain set up, i still like going to the theater).
I guess there's something about the collective experience too when you are seeing a movie. (a good one at least). For e.g. I know I was (and many other people too) very moved by seeing elder (presumably) WWII veterans visibly moved coming out of Sav. Pvt. Ryan. |
| Definatly Home | GrendelZ May 9, 2001 11:06 PM | | Thie movie theater is ok but my home system is much better.I just dont see the greatness of film that everyone talks about. The theater volume cannot be adjusted,my home doesent have screaming kids and people kicking my chair.Plus I could spend $20 on the tickets and snacks and leave with nothing, but I get to keep my DVD. |
