| Winged Migration | Worf101 Jul 21, 2003 7:31 AM | | Another beautiful, quirky art house film that I truly enjoyed. Maybe about 15 minutes too long but how they did this movie without the use of "antigravity belts" or wings is beyond me. Startlingly beautiful work. One thing that my upset some viewer is the inclusion of several scenes wherein Geese and Ducks are blasted from the sky by American hunters. One scene was particularly gruesome as some ducks land and on a lake... I could see the obvious duck blind right off but most of the audience didn't until the ducks started pecking at and talking to the obvious wooden decoys. You see in graphic terms where the phrase "sitting duck" comes from.
Blam..
But this was not done in a preachy heavy handed manner, just presented matter of factly with all the other hazards migratory birds face...
Good film, go see it.

I'd had an interest in seeing it, but cooled a bit when I read a description of it as a 90-minute screen saver. Then again, you could say the same of
i Koyaanisqatsi
, but I find that one fascinating, too.

"if the critics didnt rave about this movie - no one"
would go see it (highly overrated imho)- WInged Migration (ok for about 20 min, then the lack of any plot is mind numbing - like watching a screen saver for 90 min)

"i thought it was blatantly 'heavy handed' - not a whit subtle" also i agree, i would have been MUCH more interested in a movie on HOW they managed to film this, rather than on the documentary itself |
| stand by mine to! :) and also Microcosmos | Kam Jul 22, 2003 8:47 AM | | Posted by: Kam Jun-30-03, 02:06 PM
Definitely not a movie for everyone, but I was pretty much in awe as to the effort and energy that went into this film. This is most probably an "insiders" movie or a total bird nut to love it and truly appreciate how this movie got made. I was pretty much mesmerized by the incredible visuals they caught on film from beginning to end. And the messages they got across (hunting/polution/trapping) were well done and not heavy handed, but subtly got their view point on these issues across.
just imo.

But if you didn't like this one, you'd hate Microcosmos by the same people about bugs. I haven't seen the whole thing, but what i have seen was amazing.
I can't even imagine how much this guy's editor must hate him. In winged migration, watching the credits, they had about 50 camera men, 4 years of footage, and ONE editor. ouch. |
