And then read your review of it from a couple weeks ago. Pretty spot-on review. I won't try to rehash the movie, because i think you said exactly what i was thinking better than i could have myself. Bottomline is, i really liked the movie, but i can't put my finger on the exact reason. I think mostly because it was just sooo not what i expected and sooo unorthodox. Sandler was surprisingly impressive (though i was a bit disappointed that Happy Gilmore was visible just below the surface of Barry's skin). Emily Watson was great as usual, as was Hoffman. And i just wanted to strangle all of Barry's sisters. Beautifully and artistically shot, well acted, and sweet story underlain by lots of anxiety and tension made it a very enjoyable movie. I don't think it'd be my top movie of the year though. I think that nod has to go to Adaptation for now.

Also so The Green Mile for the first time. Freaking depressing movie. Made me cry. Damn sissy!

Glad you dug the review AND the movie.

Green Mile? You cried? Wow, I thought it was pretty damn good, but . . . cry? Not me. Takes a "Cinema Paradiso" for me to do that.

I didn't see it as depressing at all! I thought it was kinda uplifting. Tears of joy?
Yeah, something like that....tugmcmartin

the only time i seem to ever get choked up or cry at movies is when someone's showing courage in the face of death. Whether its the final charge scene in Glory, the big charge in Gettysburg, or John Cauffman in the Green Mile. That stuff really gets to me. Don't know why. So i guess it is kinda tears of joy. Joy that these people are at peace with God and themselves to the point that death doesn't scare them. There is something beautiful about that. Its weird though... good-bye scenes, professing-your-love scenes, and that sort of stuff doesn't get me at all... but courage in death does. Never sobbing, but a tear or two rolling out the eyes.

BTW, another movie which actually had me crying was Iris. The scene where Iris is taken to the nursing home was absolutely gut wrenching for me, in a "man, i hope i die before i have to do that" kind of way. Of course, it didn't help that my wife was sitting next to me and we were wathching this movie on our anniversary.

I'm a sissy...

of course i hated ET too, and Love Story .... i dont like any movie where they are blatantly trying to manipulate your emotions. they could at least be a bit subtle about it

Adam Sandler was too goofy to take seriously and too serious to laff at. For me, this was one of those Dumb and Dumber type movies.
