Well, we now have another reference disk and one that can bring out some flaws in your system! At least a brought out a few in mine.

Ok, I admit I liked this movie a lot. Renee Zellwegger just works for me on so many levels. So lets just get that fact out of the way and move on. ;>

I recently calibrated my system using the internal test tones and a Radio Shack SPL. I knew this was not the best way to do it but I don't own a DVD test disk and generally find the THX disks difficult to use for calibration purposes. I now see the error in my ways. When calibrating your system you have to use the DVD player as the source, otherwise the measurements are off. Not a lot mind you, but the center was too low and the rears slightly high. And the sound quality of the DTS on Chicago highlighted those mistakes.

How do I best describe the sound on this disk? The song and dance numbers are recorded in such a way as to give the illusion of depth and space. There is a very three dimensional quality to the sound that I have rarely encountered on any DVD. So good was this effect, that at one point it was glaringly obvious that the sound engineer had misplaced the drummer in one of the numbers (drum was coming center left in the sound field but the drummer was actually center right on the screen) or my DVD player was misinterpretting the information or something was amiss. That is how good this DVD is recorded. Instruments, chorus, dancers leads etc all maintain there place within the soundstage to completely immerse you in the scene. Unlike Moulin Rouge, which also sounds very very good but doesn't give you the same sense of space, you actually feel as though you are in a theater watching the performances not watching a film of the performances where the actual singing was done in a studio somewhere.

I know this weekend, I will be recalibrating my speakers and giving this disk another listen. It is that good.

Couldn't agree with you more. She has sweet and innocent down to an art form but adds a real intelligence to her prtrayals that I find appealing. Although lately, I think she has taken skinny chic a little far - prefer her at her Jerry Maguire weight myself or even her Bridgette Jones weight. But that is just a personal preference and she was sexy in Chicago...

I could not agree more! I did not have any desire to see this movie, but a relative brought it to watch at my house while he and his wife were in town. I could not believe how great the soundtrack was! I immediately got on Amazon and ordered the DVD to use as a reference disc. I also love Renee but Catherine Zeta Jones is also great in this picture and elsewhere!
