| "The Patriot" Dolby Digital Version Vs. Superbit Edition | Lexmark3200 Sep 24, 2003 8:54 AM | | In Columbia Tristar's attempt to bring a large part of their catalog into the DTS age via their "Superbit" remastering process, some titles are questionable...for instance, does anyone have any experience with the two-disc deluxe Superbit version of "The Patriot" (with Mel Gibson) as compared to its original, one-disc Special Edition version? I was going to purchase the Superbit version for $30, which includes a DTS soundtrack, but decided against it and purchased the standard priced one disc Dolby Digital version; the Dolby Digital mix of this film is actually STUNNING---with cannons blasting off in each rear channel, the bullets zinging by overhead; the whole surround system is used by this soundtrack, though the overall VOLUME of the mix isnt that strong. You're gonna need to crank your receiver up pretty high to get dialogue and score loud enough. Anyway, being impressed with the DD mix, I didnt think it was warranted for me to spend that extra cash just for an extra supplement disc which Im not going to watch, even though the Superbit version gets a DTS soundtrack.
Does anyone have any experience with "The Patriot" Superbit DTS version? If so, does it sound tremendously better than the 5.1 DD original release of this film? And what about another title I was thinking of getting in Superbit format, "John Carpenter's Vampires"...does anyone own this in Superbit format? Is this film's DTS soundtrack in Superbit tremendously better than the already awesome sounding standard 5.1 Dolby Digital version? |
