| Best video quality DVD's??? | Keith from Canada Sep 25, 2003 10:07 AM | | Just wondering what DVD's have the absolute best video quality? I have rounded up the usual suspects (e.g. The Fifth Element Superbit, MIB, Blade II, Star Wars I and II, some recent Bond flicks, etc) but I'm wondering what else there might be that I'm missing. Let's hear your top picks for video quality! |
| re: Best video quality DVD's??? | Kam Sep 25, 2003 8:30 PM | | it's tough for me to separate the actual technical quality of a dvd's video from the image being presented. for example, i've heard that the Starship Troopers Superbit is supposed to have superb video transfer. However, regardless of the qaulity of the video itself, the subject matter is such crap (imo) i can't watch that movie no matter how good it looks. so for myself at least, i'm way too influenced by the content of the image being projected over the quality of the video itself.
again, for e.g. The Shining. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a great video transfer, but it is such a beautifully shot movie, that even if it is "technically" inferior to the Starship Troopers DVD, there ain't no way i'm picking ST over TS. So with that long winded, bloated preface... :) here are my picks trying to marry the two of great dvd quality to beautiful films.
1. Schindler's List
2. Fellowship of the Ring
3. Road to Perdition
4. American Beauty
5. Sleepy Hollow (borderline, depp is great and it's so damn rich with imagery that it makes it in the list for now)
In the beatiful yet bad (imo) movie section
1. Snow Falling on Cedars (couldn't get over how gorgeous this movie was and how dull it was)
2. Planet of the Apes (same as above)
3. The Horse Whisperer (same guy who shot #1)
4. Titus (the one with anthony hopkins. to be fair, haven't finished it, but seems to fall under the same as above category).
5. Pearl Harbor (the mother of all beautiful looking vacumes around).

| no you're right, that was vhs... doh! my bad! | Kam Sep 26, 2003 6:42 PM | | was affected that much by the imagery over the video! didn't even remember it being vhs! |
| re: Best video quality DVD's??? | JazzHead Sep 29, 2003 7:59 AM | | Check out the "Lawrence of Arabia" Superbit. The first DVD issue of the movie was fair; this one was remastered under the supervision of Robert Harris, who restored the film back in 1989. Absolutely stunning on a high-res monitor. The detail in the sand alone is enough to make you weep. Only drawback is where they broke the picture. To maximize the bit rate, the first disc ends - in the middle of a scene! - quite a bit before the actual intermission.
Of course, I'm holding on to my other release, as it has all the documentaries and extras the Superbit lacks. But if high-quality video is all you want, then this one is deifinitely the way to go.
peace,
