Kill Bill Masterpiece or Crap?GrendelZ

I saw it yesterday and must say I enjoyed it immensely.Let me preface that by saying I enjoy all of the elements that make it good,Anime, swordplay, martial arts, and smart ass dialouge.I saw two people get up and leave during the animated sequence,so suffice to say its not for everyone. The language is typical Tarrantino, cursing just for the sake of cursing,I think every third word is not a curse word.

I really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing the next one in febuary.

Funny how you mention those above elements that you like, and haven't mentioned music?

A buddy of mine told me to "go see it right now"...well, i haven't been able to still....but...

Music was the first thing he mentioned about the movie....Were you not as thrilled with the music?

OK I saw it again tonight with a friend,it was marvelous the second time around.I caught a few things I missed the first time. The music is great at times and annoying at times. The Japanese girl band toward the end is very aggrivating and spoils the mood set previously by great theme music. Also there is one song in the middle of a sword fight that is some oldie,I cant remember the song but its kind of out of place.
Kill Bill - spotlight on pop culturedean_martin

Saw it Saturday. I thought the ode to what is cool in pop culture would be a little more groundbreaking. When Pulp Fiction came out it almost single-handedly revived interest in instrumental surf music from the 60s. Not long after PF, Tarantino got behind the VHS release of some great martial arts movies particularly the Sonny Chiba "street fighter" series. If you remember, a great deal of commentary was spent on Sonny Chiba in True Romance and Clarence and Alabama met in a theater where a street fighter movie was showing. Many of the video importer cos. like video of miami stocked up on tons of martial arts movies and TV series from the Far East.

With Jackie Brown, Tarantino revived interest in "blacksploitation" films.

And for me personally, I love the spaghetti western soundtracks, particularly Ennio Morricone's stuff. This style of music was used effectively in Kill Bill, but I already have a decent stash of spaghetti westerns on video and their soundtracks on cd.

My expectations for a spotlight on what's been cool in pop culture weren't quite met, because Kill Bill didn't really "unearth" anything long forgotten. However, I did enjoy the movie and I'll see vol. 2. I hope Tarantino develops the deep south Texas angle a little more. Tarantino's take on "white trash" would be amusing.

Oh, and the song played by the Japanese all-girl garage band was "Woo-hoo", originally done by the Rock-a-Teens in the 50s or 60s. I picked this up on a compilation after PF came out and renewed my interest in rock instrumentals from the 50s and 60s. I could see how the vocals in Kill Bill would be a little irritating, but since I was familiar with the original I thought it was pretty cool.

I enjoyed it a lot too. Like mentioned above, I really thought it would be a little more innovative rather then homage-like. But even as an homage to all those genres, it was really good. The anime was very cool how they did the fighting and the "camera" shake on impacts, etc. Very slick, cool looking movie.

Need to go rent Game of Death and Black Rain again and check them out, haven't seen them in a long time and felt some heavy influences from them in it as well.

good movie, lookin' farward to Volume 2.

peace
