| Mono DVD Soundtracks | Lexmark3200 Nov 13, 2003 8:55 AM | | Why does the packaging on older DVDs which contain mono soundtracks only say "Dolby Digital 2.0"? Wouldnt it be "1.0" because mono is the ONE speaker designation? Why is it labeled as 2.0? And why cant I use my receiver's DSP surround modes to artificially change the sound of these mono DVDs? Is it because they are simply encoded in MONO, and nothing can change their playback algorithms? When I try and run mono DVDs in "forced" surround modes like All Channel Stereo or Pro Logic II, it says across my receiver's screen "NOT AVAILABLE WITH THIS SIGNAL..." but I CAN play mono soundtracks back in 2-channel STEREO, which sounds horrible...the soundtrack actually sounds better coming from just the center channel rather than from the left and right mains... |
| re: Mono DVD Soundtracks | JazzHead Nov 14, 2003 7:28 AM | | The DD 2.0 indicates that the mono soundtrack comes from the two front speakers, rather than the center one (two identical signals, just like an old monaural record would). DD 1.0 designation indicates that the track comes from the center speaker only (I have a few of those).
Not sure why you can't run it through the fake surround mode - perhaps because it's already encoded for digital playback? Need an engineer or tech-type to answer that one - I'm just a writer. My own preference, FWIW, is to play the soundtrack in the mode envisioned by the film- or dvd-maker, especially in the case of classics. Not everything has to be in 5.1.

Thank you much for getting back to me on this...the only thing I have a problem with in regard to what you are saying is this: the DVDs with Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono soundtracks DO NOT have their sound coming from the two main left and right speakers; all the sound eminates from the center channel. I believe DD 2.0 STEREO soundtracks would be coming from the two main left and rights, whereby the Pro Logic II would take over and create surround effects from the stereo signal...
But some mono DVDs I have come to mind here: "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" is a good example of a DVD with a "2.0 MONO" soundtrack CLEARLY stated on the packaging, but ALL sounds come from the center channel...so how can it be 2.0? |

Maybe something in the setup of your system, or a peculiarity of your DVD player (though I don't see why it would essentially downmix a DD signal to one channel - that's weird).
Gone beyond my limited abilities here...
peace,
