| re: Best DVD player under $500.00 | darryl Mar 22, 2001 2:56 PM | | Hey, if you can find one, i suggest you grab a Panasonic RV80. Great above averaged interlaced player that apparently can be had for around $300 now. I wouldn't worry too much about DVD-Audio considering it's market still appears to be very quirky (i.e., bass management problems, very low amount of software, etc.). Hope this helps... Darryl:) |
| re: Best DVD player under $500.00 | recoveryone Mar 22, 2001 5:17 PM | | any of the mid range Pioneer's 434,525 models great picture and sound with loads of feature's on higher end models. Most can be had for about mid $200-350. |
| re: Best DVD player under $500.00 | JasonChap Mar 22, 2001 8:21 PM | | You can find a used or dealer demo unit Sony 7700 for under $500. This unit has good CD-sound and is a good interlaced player. This was the best DVD player sony made until the recent release of their 9000-ES progressive scan unit. Otherwise the formentioned Technics AV-10 is a good buy. Pioneer and Toshiba are the best budget players and have great mid level units as well. Just dont make the same mistake I did and buy a JVC. |
| Panasonic DVD-RP91 | Chuckster Mar 22, 2001 8:31 PM | | $450 at etronics....not available yet. I just received a 2001 DVD player catalog factory direct from panasonic:
54MHz/12 bit Video DAC
DVD-Audio w/ 192kHz/24-bit Audio DAC
Switchable Progressive Scan Output (3:2 pulldown)
DTS and DD decoders built in
Dual Lasers for CD-R/W and CD
DVD-RAM playback!
Those are just a few commendable points.....This looks to be the RV80 on steriods. I'll probably buy this one late this year. |
| Panasonic DVD-RP91 | Max Mar 23, 2001 6:11 AM | | I was thinking about getting the JVC 723GD progressive scan DVD player but I prefer Panasonics and was wondering if you had more info on this available on the net somewhere and if you knew what chip they are using in this model. Is etronics on the net? |
| Panasonic DVD-RP91 | Chuckster Mar 23, 2001 7:21 AM | | Not sure where you'll find more info, but....
The RP91 uses the Genesis chip (like the Sony 9000ES), www.etronics.com is an online dealer, and here are some more specs....
coaxial and optical output
4:4:4 signal processing
7.7 lbs
MPEG digital noise reduction
Gamma correction
Illuminated joystick remote
other Panasonic convenience features...new disc stabilizer, ne on-screen menu icons, V.S.S, etc.
The black RP91 isn't coming out until June (supposedly). The champagne player should ship in a few weeks.
(I get goosebumps thinking about this player....I definitely want to sell me RV80 now!) |
| Also | Chuckster Mar 23, 2001 7:36 AM | | I'm having the product and spec page scanned. I'll try to have those up later today. |
| I saw | Max Mar 23, 2001 8:12 AM | | that the Sony9000ES did not do very well in a Prgessive scan review considering it had dual genesis chips and they kind of put down the genesis chip when reviewing the Toshibas. They also thought that the Sony was a little pricey for what it could do. They liked the JVC and the best was from a company called RoundTable (but very expensive). They also seemed to prefer the Silicon Image based chips. Have you seen other reviews or have they upgrade the genesis chips?

| Ummm.... | Chuckster Mar 23, 2001 9:02 AM | | Max,
I read the shootout article in December, and I was immediately turned off by the Genesis chip. Although Secrets of HT/hifi perfers the Silicon chip, the Genesis chip is still a contender. As for the Camelot Roundtable, it's nothing more than a $4,000 Panasonic A120. Of course, I'm still skeptical about anything w/ the Genesis chipset (not sure if they upgraded), but depending on the success of the new prog-scan Panasonics (and new prog-scan Sonys and Toshibas), I think credit should be given to both Genesis and Slicon Image.
Of cousre, there's always the DVDO iScan Pro that you can test w/ the new RP91. |
| Ummm.... | Max Mar 23, 2001 1:12 PM | | Have you heard anything else about the JVC 723GD unique chip or have you seen the differences between it and the Sony, Toshiba, or Onkyo that use the genesis. Because I am looking to get a progressive DVD player, and there is no way I would pay more than $600 for one. I actually saw the JVC and Toshiba ones for around $399. |
| Ummm.... | Chuckster Mar 23, 2001 3:28 PM | | I haven't heard much else about the JVC. I think it's your best buy right now.
A note....The double Genesis chipset (which has a combing prob, but nothing major at all) will most likely appear in the new pannys. |
| Since you have a non-HD ready TV..... | Max Mar 23, 2001 5:59 AM | | There is little use in getting a progressive scan DVD player. A progressive scan DVD player requires a HD ready TV because it requires more lines of resolution. You also don't need one that has built in DTS or Dolby Digital decoder....that being said, there a are several good DVD players that you can get for under $300. I prefer Panasonics because they have a good track record for being able to play any disc and slightly damaged discs without skipping. |
| Since you have a non-HD ready TV..... | Chuckster Mar 23, 2001 7:14 AM | | That's where the new progressive Panasonics come in. Even if you don't have a 480p ready TV...
1. The video DAC still brings out the best picture in interlaced mode
2. Expect this man to get a HDTV in the future
3. They are considerably affordable |
