| Reality or fantasy -- question regarding RPTVs | Keith from Canada Mar 23, 2001 7:20 AM | | Hell all.
As many of you may know, I've been quietly poking around checking out big screen televisions for a house that I'll be moving into in the summer. One thing that I've noticed about virtually all big screens is that they all tend to have fairly elaborate built-in speakers (elaborate from a sales perspective). I'm just wondering if any manufacturers have figured out that the majority of HT users will never use the speakers on the televisions and have come out with a monitor only design. I don't want to spend extra $'s on speakers that I'll never use! Does such an animal exist or will I be forced to get a television with a pair of fancy high-watt 'matrix-surround' speakers that I'll invariably shut off and never use. If it doesn't exist, why not!
Thanks in advance! |
| Funny you should ask | Adam Mar 23, 2001 8:43 PM | | I asked my manager at tweeter about this, I thought is was so silly that panasonic and sony say that there TV's sound system is Virtual Dolby 3d blah blah blah. He said that unfortunately most people still don't quite see the rational of home thatre and further more company's won't bother making 2 versions shall we say of each model because there is already so much market saturation and the setup costs to add another variation just aren't worth it because of the "small" number of people who would want no speakers. Hell I would gladly have knocked 150.00 bucks off my TV so that I could forgoe speakers that are built in.
In short not any time soon... |
| re: Reality or fantasy -- question regarding RPTVs | The Technician Mar 24, 2001 9:44 AM | | The Mitsubishi RPTV's are probably the closest thing. I have the WT-46807 46" widescreen set. The built-in speakers are just OK. It does have some "matrix surround" feature that never gets used, but its basically the same technology that they have used for some time so it doesn't add alot of cost. The speakers themselves are only 5" cones. It even says in the manual that they purposely did not build in a fancy speaker system for the reasons you mentioned. I don't know if you have checked them out yet, but Mits offers probably the best performance/price on the market IMO. |
| re: Reality or fantasy -- question regarding RPTVs | googoo Mar 25, 2001 6:41 AM | | Deleting the speakers forces the user to always have external amps and speakers running. Face it, not everyone wants to listen to the local news in surround sound or turn their stereo on everytime they watch tv. Perhaps you'll see monitor only sets at the very high end (ala plasma) but don't hold your breath on entire lines of speaker-less sets. Aint gonna happen anytime soon.... |
| Yes, but only for additional money | Norm Strong Mar 25, 2001 1:15 PM | | We can take the speakers out of a TV set, if you wish, at a higher price. If you'd like to get rid of the tuner also, that can be arranged, but the price will be even higher.
Sorry, if you want to keep the price down, you'll have to accept all the goodies. |
