AV Receiver Web FolliesDeaf and Ignorant
Mar 23, 2001 7:11 PM
I posted earlier this week requesting advise on an Onkyo TXDS787 and a Denon 3801, as well as Paradigm speakers. Went to local Home Theater to hear my selections and to get a price quote before buying. Got quoted LIST on both the receiver and speakers. Responded that web prices were significantly lower. Was told that cut rate web prices on receivers did not include WARRANTY coverage. Is this true? If it is, how are these receiver makers on quality?

To my previous and future responders, thank you for the great advice. Sorry for this long post.

It depends on who the company is. For instance Klipsch has suthorized dealers that also sell on the web. I bought my speakers ia the web and it came with the Warranty. I bought my Panasonic 32HX40 via the WEB and it came with the warranty. However, when I inquired with Sunfire about Internet sales on their subwoofers I was told that if it comes with a warranty card then its covered if not it ain't, the customer service lady did tell me that even if it didn't come with a service card they would probably only charge shipping if there was an issue. My next upgrade is to get the Carver C1000 receiver which does come with a Warrant card if bought through sound city. You are probably better off just calling the company's customers service people to verify then call the Web vendor to see if the item comes with a warranty card then go from there.

What I've done is this. I bought my Onkyo 787 through a web auction. It's factory refurb and was significantly cheaper than anyplace else I could find. Comes with a one year warranty. But it works fine and folks on here that refurb was not a BAD way to go. Secondly, I could get better prices on the web for the receiver (see CNET) but nobody had the damn things. So it was kind of a tease. My Klipsch SB-3's will arrive Wednesday. They'll be paird with my old Ohm Waslh2 left's and rights.

This web thing seems to work just fine. I'll never shop brick and mortar for stereo gear again unless they'll match an internet price.

Da Worfster.
