| home theater sound?? - please help | soundoff Mar 24, 2001 1:10 PM | | I am new to home theater and I am a bit confused about something. I just bought a Yamaha YHT-23 home theater system (5 speakers, sub, and receiver). I set everything up as stated in the manual. I also hooked up my JVC HI-FI VCR, a Panasonic 27" TV, and Digital Cable into this new receiver using the standard RCA connections (none of them have a digital output unfortunately). Everything appears to work except for one thing. It seems that now matter what sound processing mode I select (or don't select), most of the sound is coming from the right front speaker. The other speakers are working, it's just that the right front is way louder than the rest. This is more obvious in some modes than in others, but it is always there. There also seems to be way too much reverb or delay in most modes. I checked all my connections to make sure they are not crossed and I even swapped the left and right to verify that the receiver is the source of this "effect". I read through the manual several times and can find nothing that explains this (however it does state that in some modes the sound should come primarily from the center speaker...which never seems to happen). When I use the speaker level TEST (which uses pink noise to adjust the speaker levels) all the speakers sound like they are at the same level. I was under the impression that I could get a decent surround sound (or even stereo sound) regardless of what source I was using (VCR, TV, CD, and soon DVD). Is it not possible to get a balanced sound unless it is coming from a properly encoded source? Am I just not understanding how home theater sound is supposed to work? Anyone have a similar system/setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated... |
| re: home theater sound?? - please help | Worf`101 Mar 25, 2001 8:37 AM | | I think you've a defective unit. Sorry, but that's what it sounds like to me. I'm new to "home theatre" but I've played music professionally off and on since the Nixon administration. I've used Yamaha gear since they started making stuff in the 70's. Sounds like real gremlin to me, bad signal processing. Call their tech support and/or go back to the store for another hook up. They owe ya.

| The first thing to do | GCM Mar 26, 2001 7:12 AM | | is go to Radio Shack and get a sound level meter. Properly balance the levels using the meter. It's not really possible to do it accurately by ear. |
| and the 2nd thing to do is | Norm Strong Mar 26, 2001 11:50 AM | | to go back to your original posting and break it up into paragraphs so it's easier to read. I simply couldn't get through it; I kept losing my way. |
