there were these 2 salesmen...stan phillippe

... i asked about matching my center channel to pick some new upgrade mains. both guys work at high end audio specialists shops. the advice from the first guy was that the receiver center settings could be tweaked in treble/bass, or maybe large/small, in the receiver settings to balance tonally to the new mains for HT. the second guys said, no, that won't work. i'd be dialing out accurate sound. but that i could wire them differently to get to a more matched tone. ie, wire the center with wire that would brighten or warm or whatever was needed to match better with mains. both did say i should bring in the center to test with various new mains. that part i believe. the setup is integra 7.1 (equiv to onkyo 787) and cambridge soundworks centerstage (their top of the line 3 way center). either of these guys have the better answer? my center sounds pretty damn nice plus it's new. like to keep it. (btw, those little dynaudio audience 40/52 bookshelves and the paradigm reference studio 40s i listened to were very nice...)

Ideally, you'd like to have all 3 front speakers be of the same manufacturer (prefereably of the same line), as this is the simplest way to guarantee that they'll be timbre matched.

Bringing the center channel in to the store to try to match up with a pair of mains is do-able but will take some careful listening and is the only good advice they gave you, IMO.

Hope this helps.

True- you should have all 3 speakers the same. Then, you have the same tweeter and mid. I had problems in the past with using a different center, but if you have a center that is similar sounding, you may be ablt to tweak it using different speaker wire to brighten it or lessen the sound. You may be able to tweak the settings on your center, but I think this depends on how good your preamp or reciever is. Most units do not allow a TOTAL seperation between speakers when you adjust equalization. If you love the mains, save up for the center. If you think you may not have them for years to come, get by with the tweaks.

I agree with Vinman on this. The only other suggestion I would make is to look into the possibility of purchasing two more Cambridge Soundworks Center speakers and using them as mains like an LCR speaker setup; that way, you know they will all be well matched to the center speaker. I'm not familiar with this particular speaker, so I don't know if this is feasible, but it may be worthwhile to consider. Best of luck to you.
