| Great Home Theatre for $2000. IMHO... | Brendan K Mar 25, 2001 11:09 AM | | I thought that this might help those of you that are on the market for a complete HT set-up but have a pretty limited budget.
Let me preface this by saying I am in no way an "audiophile." However, I've spent countless hours listening to speakers, AV receivers, etc., and have read hundreds of consumer and professional reviews. At any rate, for what it's worth, here's my set-up.
Receiver: Harmon Kardon AVR510. Retails for $999 and I bought it on-line from Sound Professionals (www.soundpros.com)for around $650. Of course I listened to it beforehand at a local shop. I couldn't be happier with my choice and at this price, it's amazing. Note: Sound Professionals are great. All equipment was double-boxed and delivered within a week.
DVD Player: Harmon Kardon DVD 5. Again, I bought this from Sound Professionals. It retails for $500-$600 and I got it for $350. Awesome as a DVD player or a CD player.
Acoustic Energy speakers: I'm using AE Aegis 3 for the fronts, which retail for $700 but I managed to negotiate and get them for $500, AE Aegis Center Channel ($250) and AE Aegis Ones for the rear speakers ($300).
Total $$$ spent: $2,050.00. Also, since I bought the receiver and DVD on-line, I didn't have to pay sales tax.
I know I'm missing a sub-woofer, but the Aegis threes' base is good enough to put off buying the sub for a while.
Hope this helps. |
| To begin with, that is NOT a home theater | Norm Strong Mar 25, 2001 12:35 PM | | That is the audio portion of a home theater, and rather expensive at that. A decent home theater consists of:
1. Some sort of monitor of reasonably large size (at least 32".)
2. The audio portion, consisting of a receiver and speakers
3. The source components, which should be both DVD player and VCR.
4. Furniture that will hold all this equipment in the right position.
5. Wires and interconnects to put it all together.
Now, with the same budget, make me a proper home theater. I did it; you should be able to also. |

| Tip: IMHO stands for IN MY HUMBLE OPINION! | Brendan K Mar 25, 2001 4:05 PM | | My sincere apologies. I was going to write in the topic line "Great A/V receiver and DVD Player w/5 speakers for $2000" but I f**ked up and referred to my set-up as a HT system. Please forgive me!
Here ya go:
36" Sony Vega ($1,200)
Straight Wire toslink cable ($50)
Straight Wire Silver S-Video ($50)
Tributarie Speaker Wire ($.30 per foot)
Salamander component rack (garage sale: $100)
As for the VCR, I don't watch VHS, so it's not really necessary.
Boy, some of you guys take this sh*t too seriously! |
| something ya gotta realize about these guys... | great unwashed Mar 25, 2001 5:34 PM | | ...in some cases the "ar" in AR.COM stands for anal retentive... |
| something ya gotta realize about these guys... | Steve H. Mar 25, 2001 6:50 PM | | hehe you got that right. |
| I'm sorry | Norm Strong Mar 25, 2001 10:14 PM | | Every so often I get that way. I say what I actually believe without regard for the feelings of others. I always regret it afterwards, and then I have to make one of these apologies. |
| I'm sorry | puffum Mar 26, 2001 7:25 AM | | I can see the therapy is working...hehehe BTW - What does your system consist of? I'm in the market for a new TV, budget is probably gonna limit me to 32" (for now) mine so far: Paradigm Titans front and rear $400 CC-170 center $170 Sony SA-WM40 Sub $160 Onkyo TX-DS575x $400 AR speaker wire and interconnects $75 Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD $190 To keep all under $2K, I've got $600 to spend on a TV. Any suggestions? |
| Hey Puffum, love those Titan's, eh.......... | BK Mar 26, 2001 2:19 PM | | bought my dad a pair this past Xmas, and everytime I go over there, he's raving about them! I too have always been very impressed with them, and for 200, nothing touches em!
Enjoy.......... |
| Affordable 36" | Scott2k Mar 27, 2001 7:58 AM | | I just got sears to price match me on a Toshiba 36A60 (great reviews). They listed it for $969 and I brought in a $799 list from AAACamera.com. The manager wasn't thrilled, but I was adamant. Good Luck. |
| I'm sorry | grahamreaper Mar 27, 2001 1:57 PM | | Though you may have put it stronger than I would, I agree with you Norm, at least on the TV. How can you say it is a HT setup without including one of the main centerpieces, the display. And then when he does add it in it jumps the price way up. I'm just starting in this and I go cut rate all the way and here is what I have Toshiba TZ50V61 RPT at Fry's for $999 delivered JVC 800VBK open box at Costco for $160 Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble III HT for $150 on ebay Toshiba SD2150 DVD from Best Buy $160 open box. RS Gold IC's $4.99 each My old JVC Hifi VCR ( about $300 bucks 15 years ago ) Still looking for some reasonable furniture. Love the Salamander Synergy, but they are freeking nuts charging the prices that they do for MDF laminated with stained wood and industrial aluminum slotted posts. I have the plans to build my own and I have found suppliers for all the parts. I figure I can build a knock off of their RPT setup for about $600 once I get someone to help me with the woodworking. Anyone interested in the Salamander Synergy stuff I can provide you with the name of the people that make the aluminium channels and show you were to get nice dimensioned drawings of how the things are put together. Don't be too hard on my system, like I said, I'm cheap |
| $2000!, man, come on... | PJ Mar 26, 2001 1:06 AM | | 5 nOrh ceramic 4.0's...$850
1 Toshiba 1200/1600 etc dvdp...$200
1 Onkyo 575x Reciever....$500
1 HSU VTF-2 subwoofer....$400
all of the above are prices that are EASY to get, and are not "great deals", most are full list prices and include shipping.
I would be VERY suprised if anyone could put a new system together that would actually be better than the above. The only potential problem is that you will not have enough power to fill a large room as the 4.0's are very inefficent. |
