NOW'S NOT THE TIME TO BUY A RECEIVER!Chuckster

Be aware that this is the time when manufacturers are unleashing 2001 models with plenty of new features all over the place. You'll be kicking yourself if you buy a receiver w/o Dolby Pro Logic II because all your 2.0 movies have the potential to sound like DD with this new technology.

I'M IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW REC...AM LEANING TO 575X... BUT I'VE HELD OFF BECAUSE I SAW ARTICLES OF THE SAME THING. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY TIMETABLE WHEN NEW GEAR IS OUT FOR RETAIL?

Another factor besides technology and time is... price! Why care about PLII if it sounds like DD5.1 and especially if those PLII receivers will cost MORE???

I don't have any data so far on PLII. I could be totally off base here. I just don't want to ignore the fact that there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Fingers and mouse too fast today; strike out the "if it sounds like DD5.1 and especially" part...

I read on HTF that the Onkyo 595 w/ DPL 2 is coming out next month. Kenwood's are coming out next month, too, I believe. More companies will be releasing them during summer (according to a friend that works at Kenwood).

With th introduction of the 2001 models the 2000 model prices will be cut across the board. IF you KNOW what you want in terms of capabilities (5.1/6.1, 100x5, etc) then buying "last years" model might be the smart move. It all depends on what you want.

If you are always waiting for the "next thing", you will never actually buy anything. There is always something on the horizon...you gotta take the plunge someday..

I got a 5700 at cost price, just before the 5800 came out. Dont regret it for a second. If you choose the right speakers, it WILL sound better than "6.1", just as "4.1" has potnetial to sound better than 5.1. The speakers should image...

I think DPL II is the last feature necessary. 6.1, 7.1....cool too, but upon reading about the DPL II technology, it seems like a must for all your old VHS, laserdisc and 2.0 DVDs.

Exactly. Or you have the people that have to keep up with the Jones', and be the first one to buy, cutting tech, and pay premium prices. I like my DD/DTS just fine.

You can never be on top, the minute you have 5.1 there is 6.1 and the minute you get that there is 7.1. You have to take the plunge and this could be the best time to make up a last years model.

Are you talking about 2.0 VHS movies or DVD movies? Right now Dolby Prologic makes a movie 4.0 but cannot make a movie have discrete left or right, so how is Pro Logic 2 going to be any better? Do you have more info, because right now this looks like a step sideways in terms of features. I try not to buy movies that are not in 5.1. I am intrested in the new recievers that I have heard will have a USB port though... now that sounds like a step forward.

I'm talking just about 2.0 anything (anything with the dolby surround badge like VHS and 2.0 DVDs, also laserdiscs & CDs). If you read Secrets of HT/Hifi's article about DPL II, you will learn that (most) stereo recordings are actually 4 sources...right, left, center, and surround. The original Dolby Pro Logic tried to decode this info but it kinda sucked. DPL II, on the other hand is reported to be the best decoder so far (others have tried...Logic 7, DTS-ES Neo, etc...). Go ahead and take the time to read this article....

Only for 2 chan sound, its still a matrixed mix. Not the same as DD 5.1/7.1 or DTS digital 5.1/7.1
Pretty bold statement, weenie...OTGCC

I was all set on the 575x, until I noticed your post and others like it. So, I started to look into the 575x's replacement, the 595. Since I saw it listed on JandR, I thought I would give them a call. I asked how soon it would be out, the salesmen told me 2 weeks. He then told me they were taking orders for it right now. I asked how much, he told me $399, but if I wanted to order it, $379. My point is that you can get the new recievers with PL2 for not much more than the previous model (I was offered $359 on the 575x for jandr). I just thought you might be interested. Take care!
