Sony FV or XBR?Steve "O"
May 15, 2001 3:23 PM
MY 27" JVC croaked last week and I'm going crazy w/o a tube! I am needing advise on which Sony Flat Screen to purchase. A Sony 32" FV26 or a 32" XBR400? Is the XBR's picture $500.00 better than the FV when playing regular cable channels? I have seen a KV-32FV26 picture on regular cable, and man it was horrible! I have not seen the KV-32XBR400 on regular cable though. I called Sony and they told me that the XBR would be the better picture. The girl I talked to didn't sound to me as if she had ever seen the XBR. I do not have a satellite nor do I plan to get one in the near future. Should I look at other models? I must keep my cost below $1600.00.

Thanks,

Steve "O"

Sony XBR400 is HDTV ready. FV26 is not.

For $1600 you might have a look at Pnansonic 32HX40 and its successor
32HX41 that supposedly have work out all the kinks that were associated with 32HX40, such geometry and color-push problems.
32HX40 is HDTV, does 16;9 enhance squeeze and it is $400 cheaper than Sony's XBRs. The way most HDTv look in regular cable is not so good, as some of them use line doublers and upconversion methods to enhance the picture. If the picture quality is not so good to begin with, it will look even worse than HDTV as it will amplify the shortcoming of the picture. If you are not planning to upgrade to satellite, I don't think you will benifit from the picture enhancement of HDTV as satellite might look better on HDTV than regular tv due to it superior picture to begin with.

Another option will be to just buy a $600 32 inch television to hold over untill HD programing really takes off and prices for HDTV fall off and stabilize.

Good luck

Hi spotter

Was the spelling that got you this time or the senseless drivel?

If you have other opinions about this matter lets hear it as you are welcomed. I might learn something too.

Now, where did I put that dictionary.....hehe

This is my last jab at him. I really don't mean to be mean, but while he sounds like he might be a smart guy, he writes these confusing half truths in something "like" english. No one is perfect, but most try to be concise.

I am done with him. Forgive me.

As far as the Sony question, Look for the new HS series of 32" and 36" WEGA product. It is basically the xbr from 2001 "trickled down". I have gotten a MSRP on the 36" at $2299.99. It may be on the website, but I have no time to go there. Peace

First of all both the models have a new version coming in. FV26 is replaced by FV27 and XBR400 is replaced by XBR450. I know a place from where you can get sony XBR400 for $1500 (it is in NJ). I have not compared the difference on regular cable. XBR has a better picture quality. Is it worth $500 more? For regular cable I don't think so. In you case I would suggest you go with KV26 or 27 the newer one. The best price for KV26 i have got is $1020. 6th Avenue electronic has KV27 and I got the price of 1100 from them two days ago.
