| Which WEGA to buy..? | Byteguy May 15, 2001 6:49 PM | | I'm considering purchasing a 32-36' WEGA Television set. I've seen some review saying that the Phillips is a good choice and others saying go with Sony. My question is, without digging through all the sites, is there one model out right now thats considered the best by a most of the people. I'm talking about overall clarity of the picture used with digital cable and a progressive DVD player.
Thanks,

If I were you, I would wait. Sony is coming out with a 40 inch 4:3 wega this fall which will include 3:2 pulldown and the next generation of their DRC circuitry. Sony is also introducing the 34 inch 16:9 KD-34xBR2 HDTV. This set will not only include 3:2 pulldown and the new DRC circuitry, but it appears that it will also be the only set on the market that will be able to give you a split screen picture with a high definition feed on one side and a NTSC normal feed on the other. Both sets have an estimated MSRP street price of $4,000.00 but I'm sure that you will be able find a lower street price. For a few dollars more that what you might spend on the the 36 inch WEGA you can probably get a much better tv by waiting. |
| Could you explain 3:2 pull down feature on Wega's TV? | Smokey May 16, 2001 2:40 AM | | .
I thought 3:2 pull down refer to capability of Prograssive-Scan DVD player.
Thanks |
| I didn't know that WEGA had a TV. I thought that Sony had a WEGA | Mullet Spotter May 16, 2001 8:53 AM | | Thanks for playing. Mr. Spelling BEE, what the HECK is a Prograssive-Scan DVD player. |
| You are improving! | Smokey May 16, 2001 4:49 PM | | But really Spotter, my question is legit.
I have never heard of a Tv does does 3:2 pull down. If this new XBR does 3:2 pull down from 480i signal, that would be awsome. You sell TV, have you ever heard of such a thing as I am sure customers have ask this question before.
You are pulling my leg on that progressive-scan DVD player, right. Higher end Progressive-scan dvd player will do 3:2 logarithm..how was that for spelling..to achieve progressive-scan signal output ( 480 progressive) as oppose to lower end Progressive-scan DVD player that will use a Line-doubler to achieve the same result( 480p).
If this new technology( 3:2 pulldown) is integrated into this new XBR model from Sony, it make use of Progressive-scan DVDp player obsolete. A regular DVd player will be suffice.
So the question remains:
Does Sony's new XBR model will have this feature or it is just misprint? |
| This don't sound right. | Smokey May 17, 2001 1:22 AM | | I was thinkuing about the following sentence I wrote in the above post:
>If this new technology( 3:2 pulldown) is integrated into this new XBR model from Sony, it make use of Progressive-scan DVDp player obsolete. A regular DVd player will be suffice.
and after thinking about it, it don't sound right. If a Tv have 3:2 pull down technology on board-lets imagine for a moment that there is such a thing-then to do its job properly, a 480i signal from non-progressive-scan player will not work because it already has been decoded (MPEG video decoder) and interlaced.
I guess the only way the 3:2 pull-down on board a TV will work is if its input signal is from the DVD disc itself which is in MPEG format, which must be fed to Tv via digital video cable.
Please somebody correct me if I am not on the right track.
Thanks. |
| This don't sound right. | Colin May 17, 2001 10:03 PM | | The 3:2 pulldown on the new Sony XBR would work in conjunction with the interlaced output of your DVD player the same as if you hooked up an ISCAN Pro external line doubler to your set. The 3:2 pulldown occurs in the analog domain (componet analog from DVD player to television. Digital conversion in television by 3:2 pulldown circuitry and recoverted back to an analog signal which is sent to the tube. It sounds complicated, but the results speak for themselves. This type of set up with an ISCAN PRO and what I've seen of the Pioneer Elites using an component interlaced DVD player produced an indiscernible difference from the same televison hooked up to a progressive dvd player performing 3:2 pulldown in the digital domain. If your interested in learning more, I would suggest going to Silicon imagings webstite at http://www.dvdo.com or checking out Secrets of Home Theater and Hi Fidelity's progressive scan dvd shootout at http://www.hometheaterhifi.com |

| Or if you don't have that kind of coin... | Mullet Spotter May 16, 2001 8:50 AM | | The current FV series of WEGA are on closeout. I like the KV36(or 32)FV26 as they have an auto setting for the 16:9 enhanced mode. They also come with nifty wireless headphones. Don't forget the MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT! |
