| Receiver question...5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc | elvis14 May 16, 2001 9:27 AM | | I'm in the process of upgrading my HT including my receiver. My current setup has a Yamaha RXV-590 receiver and Klipsch speakers (left right center and sub) and Polk audio M3's as surrounds. I'm looking to buy a receiver for less than $1000. A local shop has a good price on the Marantz SR-7000 and it sounds very good (the reviews on this receiver are very good). But as far as I can tell, the SR-7000 doesn't support 6.1 or 7.1. My current receiver is being replaced because it's DPL and not DD. Will I be making a mistake buying a 5.1 receiver now? I could have spent more $$ when I bought my Yamaha and gotten DD (AC3) at the time and I wouldn't be shopping right now!
I'm looking for opinions on the various formats and how important they are or will be AND opinions on sub $1000 receivers.
Thanks, Dave |

I can tell you this don't lost sleep over trying to stay ahead of the curve, for all we know next year there will be 10.1. If you want a receiver under a 1000 that does true 6.1 and 7.1 the only one I know of is the Denon 3801. The marantz is a good receiver as well. I would say that a good majority of people right now who are getting a 6.1/7.1 receiver are opting for a receiver with DPL-II. The Onkyo TXDS696 and I belive the Onkyo TXDS787 offer DPL-II. The Denon offers DTS NEO 6 which some compare to DPL-II. Basically it comes down to this for 6.1/7.1 and under a 1000 I belive the Denon 3801 is the only one that does it. |

6.1 and 7.1 are not really worth it. There are just not enough discrete sources out there to warrant its use. And I don't think matrixed sound is too good. Plus HDTV is in 5.1. So in my opinion your money would be better spent on a reciever with a respected rep and plenty of power. Plus other cool features. I've seen a marantz, and one nice feature about them besides their power is the remote take a look at them. Don't try to spend your full budget either. One other major thing to consider (no issue I believe with the marantz) is to see if the amp has a 5.1 input. This way if you desire later you can get a seperate decoder to run the amp when dd and dts become things of the past. |
