used as Pre/Processor, which one of these receivers...cd

would most likely provide the best sound? Or would they basically be equal? I'm listing the prices I can buy them for. Naturally, I'd like to spend as little as possible. Considering I have an external amp for the front channels, would the preamps in these 3 be pretty comparable? My main concern is SOUND Quality. Not features!!

DENON AVR2801 $ 479
Technics SA-DA10N 299
NAD T761 699

my mind says go with the NAD, my wallet says the Technics, and my gut says the Denon. ANY opinions?

I have found the Nad to be a much better music receiver than a HT one. The Denon 2801 should be similar to to the 3801 which has a rather clean sound. I've never heard the technics so I can't comment. Additionally check out the Onkyo 696 and 787.

Here is something that might make your choice easier. If I am not mistaken, the technics does not have any preamp outputs
