| Onky DS 787 - I don't think it has enough bass on the Fronts | aramis May 16, 2001 12:17 PM | | Hey all,
I recently got a Pioneer 509s to play with - its a lowend reciever yet it was giving me great deep bass on a pair of Wharfedale 16 speakers. Now, hearing all the good things about Onkyo/Denon I decided to return the Pioneer and get an Onkyo 787 and yes i got an AMAZING price on it of $714 ... at any rate, I do not heear the BASS on the front as deep as I heard it on the cheap 509s ?!?! That is odd, the only way I can induce it is to set the front gain to +7db but that introduces noise as you can imagine. I do not have a subwoofer, but still I would think that speakers should have deeper bass with the reciever. I hear more high tone imaging in the tweeter then the bass.. it seems odd to me...
Any comments? Don't make me go and buy a Pioneer 37tx :)
thanks |

Thanks |

This causes signals that are 180 degrees out of phase with eachother. When this occurs, there can be noticable cancellation of the sound waves, particularly at lower frequencies. |

and tell your system not to use a sub .
2. Go to speakers setup and check the size parameter , use your front speakers as Large .
That will remove the 80Hz low cut X-over from your mains .
3. Check the bass peak level setup ( I think you have it on the 787).
When using a sub , this parameter allow you to route the low freq from all 5 ch ( not only the encoded .1 data ) to the sub .
I think it function the same when not using a sub . ( all low freq , from all channels will be route to your main speakers ) .
Good luck . |
| re: Onky DS 787 - I don't think it has enough bass on the Fronts | aramis May 17, 2001 10:57 PM | | The sub is set to OFF, the speakers are set to LARGE... turning sub on/off changes nothing. |
| You are not setup properly...... | Terrence May 16, 2001 2:11 PM | | I bought this reciever for my son, and I can tell you it has more than enough bass output. A few questions
1. What type of setup do you use?( how many speakers)
2. Did you setup your bass management?
3. Did you calibrate your speakers for indentical output?
I use this receiver in a setup with no sub. When properly calibrated, the bass you get, is outrageous. I run this receiver with all front speakers on large. The bass from this mode, shakes my floor, rattles my windows, shifts the dishes in the kitchen, and can make your ears pop. You can feel the air shaking, and the room being pressurized. So there is no shortage of bass output from this receiver.

2. I do have them setup as LARGE, what other tweaks did you do?
I have Wharfedale Modus 16 - not the best speaker but then again.
I need to know, and test it out, there is a REMOTE possibility that the reciever might have problems as changing the SUB OFF/ON does nothing for the sound, nor anything else.
thanks |

A pair of professional monitors by klipsch 15" woofer, horn mid, horn tweeter for L/R mains. Klipsch Academy center, Klipsch THX dipoles.
2. I do have them setup as LARGE, what other tweaks did you do?
The question is, can you speakers handle the large setting cleanly. Since you have no sub, alot of very loud and deep bass comes to those speakers. Very few can handle this without overload. I suspect that was the noise you heard when you used the setting +7. Aside from room treatment, careful placement, good calibration, and good eq, no other tweaks were necessary. My L/R mains are capable of full power output to 20hz and a -3 at 18hz.
"I need to know, and test it out, there is a REMOTE possibility that the reciever might have problems as changing the SUB OFF/ON does nothing for the sound, nor anything else."
Since you have not stated you are using a sub, then it is expected that when you turn the sub on or off nothing will happen. You cannot activate something that isn't there.
Before you say the receiver has problems, follow the advice of some of the other Onkyo owners. If all of that fails, then return it.

| re: Onky DS 787 - I don't think it has enough bass on the Fronts | Worf101 May 17, 2001 10:21 AM | | Glad to see I'm not the only one who felt he had this problem. My speakers came in piece meal. When I only had the Ohm Walsh2's hooked up I thought there was a lack of bass as well. I'd been running an old Fisher hookup with some bad JVC's and thought for a while that they sounded better than the new Onkyo and better speakers. I read the manual and returned to the drawing board. Had to go in and tweak with speaker size, crossover, tone settings and presets. When I finally got the system tweaked, IN PHASE, crossover and LFE set right on the sub, the veil was lifted and everything was quite alright. I'm now in speaker heaven. I have to constantly turn DOWN the bass on the 787 tone selection. It was a good learning process. You folks gave him ALL the right answers.

I have Wharfedale Modus 1 6 speakers... no, its NOT the best speaker by far... now you are going to LAUGH, but I only have 1 spekar hooked up to the system at this time. Yes, I know that is not the way to do things, but I am in the process of getting things together.
What exactly did you TWEAK??? I do have the fronts set to LARGE and the Sub OFF.. that changes NOTHING... |
| re: Onky DS 787 - I don't think it has enough bass on the Fronts | nick4433 May 18, 2001 12:42 AM | | Aramis, did I understand you correctly? You have hooked up just 1 speaker? I mean the full total of your speakers is just 1 or am I missing something. Or do you have just 1 speaker in the back?
Anyway, you can't do much with 1 speaker.
When you do get all your speakers and if you get a Powered/Active Sub, do this:
Set speakers to small
Set Subwoofer to YES
If you do not have a Active sub then do this:
Set speakers to Large,
Set Subwoofer to NO.
This minor adjustment will show improvements right away. |
