question about recording DVDJackson1
May 16, 2001 12:22 PM
Here's a good question I have a toshiba sd1600 DVD and just recently bought a panasonic digital video camera DV-601 which has the miniDV tape system. The video cam does have rca inputs so you can plug a VCR into and transfer your old VHS stuff over to the miniDV. Of course the quality is still gonna be VHS quality. So my question is can you go out of your DVD and into the camera and record in a digital quality pictur on the videocamera?? Will the pictures transfer and what about sound. Can you somehow setup the DVD player to broacast stereo sound so that sound will record to the camera.
Any one know??
Thanks,
Jackson

I really don't think that will work. DVD's (at least most) are protected... I tried it before, and it comes about looing like crap. However, you can buy a "video stabalizer" at some internet sites if you look around. They are pretty cheap and work, but you can NEVER get as good as picture as the original becuase the media simply won't support that fine of resolution!! In fact, VHS will probably be a thing of the past as soon as digital recorders get a big enought marker share... also, be on the lookout for HD-DVD!

I don't have a DV cam-corder, but from what I've read, they don't support Macrovision. Of course, (there's always a catch) DV tapes are too short to record most films. If you want to tape DVDs, get a good-quality S-VHS VCR and a Sima SCC (jandr.com) ...and use real S-VHS cassettes.

DV does not support Macrovision in the form that the picture will be disturbed- It will not be altered. Unfortunately, Dv will also generally not let you record this anyway~!

This was the big stink when manufacturers made plans to put video and digital inputs into these devices. My earlier DV device does not have inputs. They started putting them in after they made sure you can not record macrovision protected materials. It will say "Copy inhibited" on your screen. I even tried a pass-through technique but couldnt get it to work.
