What do you guys/gals think about buying refurbished receivers? I've seen some good deals on Marantz etc. Is there anything to beware of? thanks in advance... Danny (P.S. Thanks for your informative replies on my other questions.)

Provided you have a decent backup plan yes. I.E. its not a "sold as is" deal where if it gets broke your out of luck. I trust marantz offers this. So in short a refurb is better than new because its cheaper and its been looked over for potential problems twice. The second time was probably more thoroguh then the first.

The Marantz units I've seen from authorized dealers are refurbished by Marantz and offered with a one year factory warranty. I believe accessories4less also offers a no hassle 14 day return policy so I can't see any problems/concerns saving some cash by going this route.

I went refurbished when I bought my Onkyo 787 receiver. I was having a hard time finding one anywhere for less than list. I found one on auction on ebay. Factory refurbished by Onkyo, one year limited warranty. It's been nothing but the honey since I've had it. I'm in home theatre heaven. I'd recommend it for budget audiophiles and folks who don't mind a little risk with their bargins.

I know I have been tempted at times on these refurbished goods. Remember two way shipping alone (with insurance) can run 100.00. Another thought advanced by a friend who makes a good living---If you earn 50+ per hour, its probably not worth the 4 hours(translates to 200.00) you spend researching the goods, to save 200.00, let alone the fact that in many cases you have no warranty. In the final analysis I guess the peace of mind is worth something.
If you can get it locally however and actually try it it is a somewhat different story since about 85% of electronic failures occur during the first few hours of operation.
