| Is Sony Worth It? | Ramius May 16, 2001 5:28 PM | | Are Sony Analog TVs worth the extra $$$ over the competition? The Toshiba 36" cost less than the Sony 35". Moreover, the Toshiba 36" cost less than the Sony 32". And why did Sony not just make it 36"? Why is Sony always trying to mess up the standards (example: Beta, MiniDisk, SACD, etc.)? |
| As Mr.......... | Jetsons May 16, 2001 6:56 PM | | Woodman would say, look at the warranty which should be indicative of the confidence the manufacturer has on the reliability of a product. I believe SONY is only 90 days labor & one year parts while the Tosh sets have one year parts and labor. Add a larger screen for less money and the answer becomes a bit more evident, IMO.

What sony is probably doing is testing the market for these new formats. Think of the money they could make if they hit the nerve just right and one of these formats catches big time. I think MD is probably a good format and Id like to see it take off, but its probably going to die a slow death. CDR seems to be stomping this one out. |
| Why is Sony always trying to mess up the standards? | Chuck G May 17, 2001 9:42 AM | | Sony didn't try and mess up any standard with Betamax, they DID lose the war with VHS because they didn't licence Beta with other manufactures like JVC did with VHS. They are a forward thinking company and you saying they are messing up STANDARDS is very ridiculous. |
| Why is Sony always trying to "SET"---- the standards? | MILO YAMBAGS May 17, 2001 10:15 AM | | YOUNG MORON...YOU ARE MISTAKEN... SONY HAS BEEN A LEADER AND INNOVATOR
OF AUDIO AND VISUAL PRODUCTS FOR YEARS--- I'D SAY THEY SET THE STANDARDS MORE OFTEN THAN NOT . AND IF A COMPANY DOES NOT TAKE RISKS..WE WOULD NEVER SEE NEW PRODUCTS HIT THE SHELVES. REMEMBER THE WALKMAN--THE TRINITRON PICTURE TUBE... ETC, ETC. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE HITS AND MISSES...BUT TO BLAME SONY FOR MESSING THINGS UP..I WOULD PUT THE BLAME ON YOUR PARENTS FIRST! LOL |
| re: Is Sony Worth It? | KevinL May 17, 2001 5:25 PM | | I could have sworn I posted this already, but anyway... The answer is it depends on what you are talking about. As with most manufacturers, Sony has it's prizes (Trinitron, walk-man, etc) and it's lemons (HD RPTV)
The Trinitron's have the sharpest focus tube around... definitely worth it. But don't assume just becuase it says "Sony", it can't still suck.
By the way, as far as RPTV goes, I'm going with Toshiba TW56H80.... awesome picture. |
